Malaysiakini will cease providing its SMS headlines service next month, said the online news site CEO Premesh Chandran today.
The SMS alerts, which has been available to Maxis users since July last year, will no longer be offered as the telecommunication company has decided to terminate its agreement with Malaysiakini.
Though Maxis has not given any official reason for its decision to pull the plug on Malaysiakini.
Malaysiakini has been negotiating with Maxis over the past month in the bid to keep the service active. The SMS alerts allows Malaysiakini to send out news headlines at least three times a day to mobile phones of subscribers to the service. “It has been in high demand, especially among our readers who want to keep in touch with breaking news.
We are however looking at other alternatives,” said Chandran. Final month Current subscribers will continue receiving news headlines via SMS until the service ceases on March 19.
Others can still subscribe for this final month when the service remains active. “It’s going to be an exciting time in the next few weeks with the general elections producing hot stories daily.”
Maxis users (012 and 017) wanting to keep up with the news, can sign on to the service by sending an SMS to 26000 with the message “BUY MKINI”. The service costs RM5 per month.
