Malaysian minister warns against politicising ICJ ruling

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's trade minister has warned against politicising the International Court of Justice (ICJ)'s ruling on Pedra Branca, Middle Rocks and South Ledge.

Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the ruling party or UMNO's vice president, said the Malaysian government's decision to refer the matter to the world court was a collective one. As such, no one should be blamed for bringing the matter to the ICJ.

He said: "We are collectively responsible. This has been decided by the Malaysian government which is still the same Barisan Nasional government. We've agreed that this is the best option."

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi said Malaysia must make preparations to ensure that the ICJ decisions are implemented.

The Malaysian government also reiterated that it will abide by the ICJ's ruling which is final.

The ICJ at The Hague on Friday awarded sovereignty over Pedra Branca to Singapore, while that over Middle Rocks was awarded to Malaysia. The ownership of South Ledge, though, remains open.

PM Abdullah said Malaysia must determine quickly the boundary line for South Ledge to see if it is truly located in Malaysian waters.

He said what needs to be done now is for officers from Singapore and Malaysia to map out and determine the boundary of South Ledge, based on existing law.

Mr Abdullah also said he and Foreign Affairs Minister Rais Yatim will seek an audience with the Sultan of Johor to explain the ruling in more detail.
