Pakatan Rakyat MPs against FT parking hike

KUALA LUMPUR - Pakatan Rakyat MPs are today united in their comdemnation on the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) decision to raise parking fees for vehicles in the nation's capital and its surroundings starting Monday.
According to joint statement to Harakah, the step taken was very disappointing.

"We as parliamentarians representing the people of Kuala Lumpur feel very dissapointed with the DBKL decision to raise parking fee charges by 35 percent from 60 cents to 80 cents at city centre effective next Monday," they stated.

This merely adds salt to the wound as the people has to face increased fuel prices when the Prime Minister announced the 78cent to RM1 raise last week, the said.

"We do not reject the pro-active step taken by the DBKL to change its old parking collection system to the new Electronic Parking System (SLKE).

"However, we hope DBKL will re-evaluate the raise which is said due to the change of the parking system," they added.

They said that the machine used in SLKE will be using solar power for day operation and only uses battery for night use. Thus there is no connection with fuel or electricity in the long run.

"There for, the raise is not reasonable if it is solely due to the change in parking system. The cost of change will solve itself when collection goes underway and without the need for any raise

"The DBKL must be sensitive to the current situation facing the people and must take into consideration the people's views through their elected representatives before implementing policies which will affect the people's budget," they stressed.

The parliamentarians involved in joint statement were Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim (Ahli Parlimen Bandar Tun Razak), Dr. Tan Seng Giaw (Kepong),Teresa Kok (Seputeh), Dr. Lo'lo' Mohammad Ghazali (Titiwangsa), Fong Kui Lun (Bukit Bintang), Wee Choo Keong (Wangsa Maju), Tan Kok Wai (Cheras), Tian Chua (Batu), Lim Lip Eng (Segambut) and Nurul Izzah Anwar (Lembah Pantai).
