Panel to find seat for Anwar to contest

MALAYSIA - IPOH : Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has formed a committee to look into which area Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will stand in a by-election for his comeback into active politics.

"The committee will look into it and the decision will be made public soon," Anwar said. When pressed further to name a place for him to contest, he said: "Perak is a good idea and it depends on the decision of the court on the disputed Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat held by Datuk Seri (now Tan Sri) Rafidah Aziz."

In the disputed case, a dissatisfied voter Ahmad Jamaluddin Abdul Majid had filed an election petition in the High Court here to declare the results of the Kuala Kangsar seat null and void. Ahmad was unhappy that returning officer Datuk Mohd Ghazali Jalal had accepted the nomination papers of Wanita Umno chief Rafidah despite her not signing two of the three nomination forms.

Rafidah won the seat for the seventh time after securing a 1,458-vote majority against Perak PAS deputy commissioner Dr Khairuddin Abdul Malik.

When asked to comment on the 100-day performance of the PR state governments, Anwar said ""The PR government is stable contrary to the earlier observation that it may be fragile, and it has also undertaken several programmes and delivered them to the ground even though the federal government is not supportive."

He was speaking to the press after attending the Perak PKR Youth convention here this afternoon.

When asked to comment on Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah's statement yesterday that a Barisan Nasional (BN) component party will leave the coalition before the end of the month, Anwar said: "I know the party concerned." But he declined to name the defecting party.

When asked whether the party was a Sabah-based party, he joked: "Why not MCA or MIC, why Sabah?"

On the expected massive defections from Sabah and Sarawak BN parties to PR, Anwar said: "You will know in due time."

Earlier, in his speech at the PKR Youth convention, Anwar urged them to take advantage of the unrest in the BN component parties and recruit more educated youths from BN into the PR fold. He said the time is ripe for PR to recruit more youths and strengthen the opposition coalition.
