Selangor MCA: Abolish road tax and tolls

KUALA LUMPUR, The Selangor MCA has called on the Federal government to abolish the road tax for all vehicles to ease the burden on the people following the fuel price hike and a possible hike in electricity tariff in the country.

In making the call, Selangor MCA chief Datuk Ong Tee Keat also proposed that toll payments in Selangor be abolished. He said Selangor had the highest number of tolls in the country.

Ong, who is also the Transport Minister, said the decision was made after deliberations and meetings between party leaders and grassroots members and that the proposals would be submitted to the government soon.

"This is not my own personal decision. Of course, in my capacity as the Transport Minister, I would have to take note of the people’s voice and bring it to the Cabinet and attention of various ministers such as the Finance Minister and Works Minister for consideration,” he told reporters after chairing a two-and-half-hour MCA Selangor meeting here.

With the petrol and diesel prices at RM2.70 and RM2.58 per liter respectively from last Thursday, the government had decided to give an annual cash rebate of RM625 to personal vehicle owners with engine capacity of up to 2000cc, and pick-ups and trucks of up to 2500cc and RM150 rebate for motocycle owners with engine capacity of less than 250cc.

The government will also give RM200 discount on road tax for owners of private vehicles with an engine capacity of more than 2000cc and RM50 for motocycles with an engine capacity above 250cc.

Presently, owners of private vehicles with engine capacities of less than 2000cc (petrol) are paying between RM55 and RM380, while those with an engine capacity of more than 2000cc are paying RM381 and above annually.

On a related issue, the Transport Minister said that the overhauling of the public transportation system in the country would need comprehensive cooperation from various ministries.

On the rail system which is under his ministry’s jurisdiction, he said various initiatives would be taken including to conduct audit on safety and costing of the system, to increase the trains (LRT and KTMB) capacity and to ensure that KTMB services were on par with international standard.
