Two more join 33 charged with illegal gathering

KUALA LUMPUR, Mon:

Two self-employed men today joined the list of 33 others when the two were charged with illegal gathering to protest against rising prices earlier this year. The other 33 were charged in January.

P. Saravanan, 31, and Mohd Zamhuri Abu Tahir, 59, were charged at the Sessions Court with participating in an illegal assembly at Avenue K, Jalan Ampang, between 2.45pm and 4.25pm on Jan 26.

The duo also faced a second charge of refusing to heed orders to disperse on the same day. They claimed trial to the charges.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Fariza Hamzah proposed bail at RM1,000 and a condition that they would not take part in illegal assemblies in future.

Judge Mohamad Sekeri Mamat granted the two men bail of RM1,000 with one surety each with the condition.

He also allowed Fariza’s application for the two be jointly tried with the others.

The trial of the 33, which was set for three days from today, was also postponed from Oct 13 to 15.

Counsel Latheefa Koya told the court that the lead counsel Amer Hamzah Arshad was attending an election petition case in Ipoh.

“We have written to this court through a letter dated June 11,” she said.

Latheefa also said that 12 of the accused were involved in a Federal Court case which begins today.

On Jan 28, 33 people, including 10 women, were charged with taking part in illegal assemblies at various locations at Jalan Ampang here and refusing to heed orders to disperse.

Pas vice-president Mohamad Sabu, Parti Keadilan Rakyat supreme council member Dr Badrul Amin Bahrun, Kuala Selangor MP Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) president and Kota Damansara State Assemblyman Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim were among the 33.

Also in court was a Malaysiakini journalist, Syed Jaymal Zahiid Syed Kamal, who was charged with obstructing a policeman.
