Azlan Shah: Control your greed: The pot calling the kettle black

The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, has advised those who hold positions and power to control their greed by using the best of their knowledge and common sense.

The Ruler said that the biggest test faced by humans in their lives was when they were living easy and affluent lives and when they held powerful posts.

“When faced with such a test, humans have to use the best of their senses and knowledge to overcome their urges,” he said in his speech at the SMK Sultan Azlan Shah religious school’s 25th jubilee celebration and prize-giving ceremony here Monday.

Sultan Azlan Shah also said that the possession of true and balanced knowledge could help humans control themselves from succumbing to temptation and negative influences.

However, the true test of knowledge can not only be measured by a person’s academic achievements but when the person faces the tests of life, he said.

As such, the Ruler urged school authorities to pay close attention to actively organising programmes that would give their students ample opportunity to interact with people of different races and religions.

He pointed out that the weakness of schools like SMK Sultan Azlan Shah was that it did not provide a social environment that was similar to Malaysia’s actual multiracial society.

“The ability to understand and respect the different religions and cultures is an important component in the social process,” he said.

Sultan Azlan Shah also said that the excellence of a school should not only depend on Government aid but also on the community, parents and alumni.
