Royal probe urged into 'unlawful takeover' of Perak

Perak PAS has called for a royal commission of inquiry to investigate the “unlawful takeover” of the Perak government by Barisan Nasional.

This was the main resolution that more than 800 delegates passed at their annual party convention yesterday in Teluk Intan.

Party president Abdul Hadi Awang (right) officiated the event, with DAP and PKR leaders among some 1,000 participants.

Convention director Khairuddin Abdul Malik said: “Government agencies which should have acted neutrally to safeguard the interests of the people had opted to assist Barisan Nasional through illegal means to achieve its takeover of the Perak government.”

Asked if he expects the federal government to give in to a demand which may implicate it, Khairuddin said: “The government called for a royal commission into the (‘black eye’) incident involving Anwar Ibrahim and (into) the VT Lingam case.

“These incidents are nothing when compared to the political crisis in Perak that is shaking the very foundations of democracy. The illegal coup by BN is far worse in terms of the economy, security and the well being of Perakians.”

Khairuddin said the royal commission should be set up as soon as possible and that PAS has “all the evidence and witnesses to expose the illegal back-door entry of the BN government”.

He also alleged that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission had acted with BN to topple the Pakatan Rakyat government in Perak, by bringing bribery charges against former PKR representatives Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang) and Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu (Changkat Jering).

“We lodged a report on this (alleged sex offences) with the state religious department last August but till today no action has been taken,” he said.

‘Not giving up cause’

Pakatan’s ousted menteri besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said he is too busy with the political struggle in Perak to contest the PAS vice-presidency, despite being nominated.

Met at the convention, he confirmed that he has returned the official car assigned to him when he was menteri besar.

“After the Court of Appeal verdict (on Friday) that Zambry (Abd Kadir) is the legitimate menteri besar of Perak, I returned home at 6.30pm to find a letter from the BN state government ordering me to surrender the official car at once.

“As I respect the court’s verdict as a law-abiding citizen, I returned the car the next day. But surrendering the car does not mean that I am giving up my legal right (to be deemed) head of the state.

“I will continue to fight for justice for my legitimate cause until I receive a just and fair verdict from either the courts or the people.”

All the former Pakatan exco members had surrendered their official cars earlier. Only Nizar and state assembly speaker V Sivakumar had refused to do so until the courts determine their legal status.

Pakatan intends to hold a three-day hunger strike from tomorrow to draw public attention to the legal battle to be reinstated in the Perak government.
