SHAH ALAM: PAS today urged the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to convene an emergency session of the Parliament to discuss the conduct of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Its vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar in a statement said the death of Teoh Beng Hock, an aide to Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, while in MACC custody has tarnished the image of the commission.
“The Parliament had only recently approved the formation of MACC, giving it wide powers to investigate corruption, what happened yesterday was an insult to Parliament,” said Mahfuz who is also Pokok Sena MP.
He also accused the commission of launching a politically-motivated investigation when it ignored reports on the construction of Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo’s house in Shah Alam.
“Parliament has to discuss MACC’s integrity,” he added.
Mahfuz, who also backed the formation of a commission of inquiry, slammed Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who suggested the police should be allowed to carry out investigations on Teoh’s death.
“We have lost our faith in the police. There are many unsolved cases, like A. Kugan, who died in custody, how can we trust the police?” said Mahfuz referring to the death of a suspected car thief in a police lockup last January.
Earlier, Muhyiddin urged all parties to stay calm and not to over-react over Teoh’s death.
Teoh was interrogated by the MACC as a part of the investigation into the alleged misuse of government allocations by state assemblymen for their constituencies.
He was found dead yesterday on the roof of a building next to the Selangor MACC headquarters.
