KUALA LUMPUR: Kulim-Bandar Baru MP Zulkifli Noordin today launched a scathing attack against wheelchair-bound opposition stalwart Karpal Singh.
At a joint press conference with three former PKR MPs, which saw them dishing out a litany of challenges to the DAP veteran, Zulkifli asked if Karpal's body is now weak.
"Does he still maintain 'over my dead body' when it comes to the issue of implementing Islamic policies, or is his body weak now? Is he a living corpse?” he asked, flanked by Bayan Baru MP Zahrain Mohamed Hashim, Tan Tee Beng (Nibong Tebal) and Mohsin Fadhli Samsuri (Bagan Serai).
The quartet also referred to PKR Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong's demand in February 2009 that Karpal apologise for challenging Anwar's position as opposition leader.
They also read out excerpts from Wee's blog, which stated: "Bukit Gelugor requested Anwar to step down for causing trouble in the coalition and blamed him for creating trouble and said that the former deputy prime minister needed to repent.
"He said Anwar needs to repent without further betraying the people and their trust. He said Pakatan Rakyat needs another leader and he lashed out at DAP leaders who have been swayed by Anwar's rhetorics."
In view of this, Zulkifli, who was recently sacked from PKR, challenged Karpal to state if he has repented with regard to Anwar's position.
Can he accept Islam?
He also challenged Karpal to state his stand on PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's suggestion that the word “Tuhan” be changed to “Allah” in the Rukun Negara.
"We also want to ask Karpal on his stand regarding a statement by PAS that DAP leaders have repented and can now accommodate Islam.
“Can Karpal accept Islam? Has he repented on this?" he asked.
“
Does he still maintain 'over my dead body' when it comes to the issue of implementing Islamic policies, or is his body weak now, is he a living corpse?”
Zulkifli also questioned Karpal's silence on Bota assemblyman Nasharuddin Hashim who had defected to PKR but later rejoined Umno prior to Barisan Nasional's political coup in Perak.
The final challenge was why Karpal did not push for DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang to take over as opposition leader from Anwar since the party now has more parliamentary seats than PKR.
Zulkifli said Karpal should have done so since he is “always upholding basic human rights”.
They voted for us
Zulkifli also dismissed a question on whether the constituents felt betrayed because of their actions.
He insisted that the voters had cast their ballots for them, and not their party.
"How do you know the public is supporting the party?” he asked.
“You would not know. If you can come up with proof that people voted for us 100 percent because of our party, then you can come and say that.
“We cannot tell how many percent is for an individual or for the party," he said.
