BUKIT BERUNTUNG – Top Barisan Nasional leaders went on an Anwar Ibrahim bashing spree saying that his "lust" for power and his ongoing sodomy trial as reason not to vote Pakatan Rakyat in today's by-election.
Prime Minister Najib Razak told a 3,000-strong crowd that his political foes had lied about him agreeing to hold a debate with the Opposition Leader over various allegations made in the course of the eight-day campaign.
"Instead I propose that Anwar holds a debate with Saiful," Najib said in reference to Saiful Bukhari Mohd Azlan, who has accused the PKR de facto chief of sodomising him in June 2008.
BN has promised more than RM60 million in a combination of projects and cash awards to the 64,500 voters in its traditional stronghold the size of Malacca.
It won all three state seats within Hulu Selangor in Election 2008 but lost the federal ward by 198 votes.
Najib said Anwar blamed him for the sodomy allegations but this did not make sense.
"He blames me but who chose Saiful to be his special officer?" the country's sixth prime minister asked.
'Don't waste your vote'
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad also took part in the campaign for the second time, telling the crowd that Anwar's only objective was to become prime minister and he is willing to do anything for it.
"Such obsessions can drive someone crazy," the veteran politician said of his former protege.
He said Anwar had stabbed him in the back when he was deputy prime minister but it didn't work.
He warned voters that if they helped Anwar gain power he would one day also stab them in the back.
"Don't waste your vote," Dr Mahathir said.
