KUALA KUBU BARU: PKR has slammed the Election Commission for continuing to feign ignorance over the reassigning of 13,488 registered voters in Hulu Selangor to different polling stations than the one they had voted at in March 2008.
At a press conference here this afternoon, PKR candidate Zaid Ibrahim demanded that the EC explain the issue instead of just denying it.
“The EC has brushed aside the issue and even ordered PKR not to politicise it. But how can it do this without informing the voters and the opposition party? Is this how you run the country and elections?” he asked.
Zaid appealed to the voters to take the initiative of finding out their new polling stations in order to avoid chaos on election day this Sunday.
“I hope they will still vote even if their new station is a little further way. We are witnessing a massive problem and I hope Hulu Selangor will be able to overcome this unprecedented and unusual circumstance,” he said.
Meanwhile, PKR's election director Fuziah Salleh claimed that the EC continues to be in denial even after she produced proof of the matter.
She described the situation as an “embarrassment” for a commission that is supposedly independent and responsible for ensuring fair elections.
'Irresponsible and incompetent'
Fuziah also warned that if the EC continues to keep mum after the next 24 hours, PKR will have no choice but to consider this as a malicious attempt to topple the party in the by-election.
“The EC gets angry when we call it an agent of Barisan Nasional, but it has not done anything to prove otherwise,” she pointed out.
“The commission is irresponsible and incompetent and should resign en bloc if it can't even manage the basics of an election process,” she added.
Fuziah said PKR is forced to step into the EC's shoes in informing the voters concerned of their new polling stations by registering a hotline number and a SMS service as well as printing lists that
match voters to their new polling stations.
However, PKR has decided to reserve taking legal action against the EC until after the election.
“I don't want to waste time fighting the EC. Our real enemy is BN and I don't want to be distracted. I will deal with the EC later,” he said.
The recent transfer of 230 registered voters in Kampung Tanjung didn't escape Fuziah's tirade either.
Earlier his week, the voters learnt that their constituency is now Rawang which renders them ineligible to vote in the upcoming by-election.
“This is an illegal amendment of boundaries,” stated Fuziah. “I spoke to the EC's legal adviser and even he couldn't provide a satisfactory explanation.”
“We are continuing to discover more names of voters outside Kampung Tanjung who are also missing from the electoral list although they voted in 2008. I am now compiling evidence of this,” she said.
According to Zaid, many voters have approached him during his walkabout sessions to complain that their names have been removed from the list.
“This is a violation of people's fundamental rights,” he stressed. “And I don't just blame the EC for this. I also blame the prime minister.”
