Umno legal advisor Mohd Hafarizam Harun called for the arrest of PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail under the Internal Security Act (ISA) and suggested that her party is de-registered, for rejecting the ‘ketuanan Melayu’ (Malay supremacy) concept.
When Wan Azizah questioned the rights of the Malays, his assertion was that she was directly challenging the provision in the federal constitution and that her remarks were not considered a ‘freedom of expression’.
His comment appeared in an interview with Umno-online.com: “The ISA should be invoked against PKR, DAP or PAS leaders who continue to question the special position and privileges of the Malays because it is now proven that they try to stoke hatred towards the Malays because of the special rights”.
He said that Wan Azizah’s speech, which was made at the PKR congress and attended by non-Malays, was sufficient to belittle the position, status and rights of the Malays and the Malay rulers.
Mohd Hafarizam urged people to lodge police reports against Wan Azizah for uttering seditious remarks and that the report could be forwarded to the Registrar of Societies because the party had been fanning hatred and racial prejudice.
He made reference to the time Umno was deregistered in the late 80s and said, “Umno itself had its registration revoked in 1987. Why should there be a special treatment to PKR as though they are immune.”
It appears that each time someone makes a legitimate remark, which the likes of Umno, Perkasa or some religious authority, find disagreeable, the usual expected response is not counter-argument with intelligent debate.
The usual retaliation is in most cases, an over-reaction, with suggestions to lodge police reports, for arrests under the ISA, for violent protests and in some cases, calls for a fatwa.
It is troubling to see an Umno legal advisor pandering to the wishes of a small group of people who are prejudiced. Is he unaware of the power of the digital age, where globalisation has made the world smaller and where a proposal such as his, will be futile?
How is he going to monitor all those remarks? Is our police force able to cope with several thousand arrests? Is Kamunting big enough? More importantly, is he under-worked that he is able to come up with time-wasting suggestions?
Mohd Hafarizam appears to be devoid of common sense suggestions just as his paymasters are bankrupt of ideas and good governance.
On the other hand, has he considered the important role he would play if the government did act on his suggestion and arrested Wan Azizah?
Her arrest would trigger a backlash and an unprecedented public reaction that he might well live to regret the part he played in public disorder. Ironically, this Umno legal advisor might feature in the history books as someone who was a catalyst for change and who engineered the tipping point in Malaysian politics.
