China colony, King-less republic, fading GE: What next from Najib

Written by Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

Fom Selangor becoming a colony of China to the whole of Malaysia turning into a republic without a King or Sultans, Utusan is not letting up its attack no matter how flawed or illogical against the Pakatan Rakyat led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

But isn't it strange that the editors of this Umno-owned rag would want to spend so much time on a subject that is losing its appeal even amongst the Malays, its main target audience.

If indeed anyone there was sincere about wanting to help create a better Malaysia, then Utusan would surely do better to warn the country, especially its target Malay audience, about the real danger looming before us all - the deliberate construction of a cult dictatorship similar to the Great Leaders in North Korea aimed at further eroding the already wafer-thin democratic rights held by the Malaysian people.

Because this is exactly what is happening and in its own turf - Umno!

A cult dictatorship and a culture of sycophancy

Look no further than to Saturday's nonsensical BN meet. The way the BN lawmakers were protrayed by the mainstream media speaking of Prime Minister Najib Razak in awed almost hushed tones, and the praises they lavished on him for "agreeing to meet" them is mind boggling.

Could such backward-thinking sycophants ever lead a nation, let alone ram through tough and critically-needed reforms? Yet, these bodek-kakis from Umno, MCA. MIC, Gerakan and the East Malaysian parties were only interested to be captured on film or in the press showering glowing praises of Najib.

No doubt, they may feel they need to bow and scrape to boost their chances of getting picked to stand again in the next General Election. But also, it was obviously encouraged by Najib and his team, most likely on the advice of expensive public relations experts such as APCO.

You see, when an object is hollow - like an empty vessel - it really needs to make a lot of noise to be heard.

From GE in Q1 to long-term "political transformation"

In the run-up to the Saturday binge, Najib himself drew attention to the event by declaring that "everything was geared towards elections". However, after meeting all those 'grateful' MPs, he is now talking about long-term "political transformation".

What a joke!

From GE-13 likely to be within the next few months, maybe even simultaneously with the Sarawak state polls, the date has now been pushed to "long-term" 2012 or even 2013. No wonder Najib was annoyed when reporters bugged him for a clue on the time line! "How can you ask me that?"

If months ago, the spin from his camp was that snap polls were imperative because the global economy was souring fast and could push Malaysia into another recession, their latest is that the PM - being wise as he is - wants to wait for the 'fruits' of his economic 'planning' to kick in before he dissolves Parliament!

That's fine if they insist it is so, but very likely the only kick that will be delivered will be one that sends Najib flying through the main door at Putrajaya - and in an outwards direction!

The real motive - postponing Umno polls

Still, pundits are unsurprised though. They pointed out that the pro-snap GE spin was actually geared towards helping Najib push for a postponement of his Umno party polls. Now that it has been done and Muhyiddin's nose put safely out of the joint, their focus is how to soft-land the fact that there won't be any snap GE after all!.

Disgusting? But that sums up the Najib administration so far. It is up to his party mates to fight for their own democratic rights. No wonder, the Umno elite kicked up such a fuss and spent a "fortune" trying to destabilize the PKR historic direct elections and paint it in a bad light. At least, Malaysians now know that PKR members got to choose whom they wanted for their top leadership. But not, it appears, Umno members!

Pakatan Rakyat leaders say they had no choice but to monitor BN closely, although all along in their personal views, the majority were extremely skeptical of any GE this year.

They say unless Najib can regain two-third parliamentary majority, he is history in Umno and he knows it. Give Muhyiddin a chance, let Razaleigh reform the party - that's what the Umno warlords will demand when the hot-gas balloon that is the SS Najib is finally deflated leaving little trace, if any at all, of having done anything good for Malaysia.

Watch the money

So in the meantime, Najib will have to continue his game of distracting Umno members not savvy enough to catch on yet. Outside of Umno, he will also have to continue to wage the same racist and religious wars that have marked his administration so far. As 2009 started with Malaysia in the the international headlines for all the wrong reasons, the same is likely to happen this year.

Selangor Umno - under Najib - can be expected to top the list of troublemakers, while lures and "marriage" proposals will continue to be sent to PAS. Each time, the stakes and the price will be raised.

But in the meantime, the country will continue to be directionless, badly ruled and poorly administered. Malaysia will continue to suffer.

Opposition MPs who late last year questioned Najib about the huge allocations he 'sapu-ed' (swiped) for his own department during the 2011 Budget must now watch even more carefully where the funds will be spent. The excuse 'leaked' out by the PM's minders then was that the money was for the BN's election war chest.

Whose personal war chest will the money go to now?
