THE TRUE HISTORY OF CHINESE & INDIANS IN MALAYSIA

As stated by Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK)

RPK

A confusion has erupted due to ignorance. It has been stated that the Indians came here as beggars and the Chinese as prostitutes. Actually, if you were to really study Malayan and Malaysian history over the last 500 years or so, you will find that this country’s history is not just about beggars and prostitutes. It is about much more than that.

Malayan history has to be dissected into many periods. And each of these periods saw immigration involving almost all the races in Malaysia, save the Orang Asli (the Original People). In New Zealand, these Orang Asli would be the Maoris and in Australia the Aborigines. Therefore, anyone who is neither a Maori nor an Aborigine is a ‘pendatang’ or immigrant.

THE ARABS IN MALAYSIA

The Arabs and the Indians (Muslims from Gujarat) came to Malaya more than 500 years ago as traders and merchants. These were the people who brought Islam to this country. At that time, the locals were mostly Hindus while those from Negeri Sembilan were Buddhists, plus many who worshipped trees, the sea, rivers, mountains and whatnot. The coming of the Arab and Indian merchants exposed the locals to Islam.

In those days, the people followed their Rulers. Therefore, when the Rulers converted to Islam the people followed – although they may not have believed in Islam or understood the religion. In fact, many till today still do not understand Islam after more than 500 years.

THE CHINESE IN MALAYSIA

Then along came the Chinese and many were actually Muslims as well. Islam first reached China around 100 years after Prophet Muhammad. This means Islam had ‘migrated’ to China about 1,300 to 1,400 years ago, 800 to 900 years earlier than Islam in Malaysia. Of course, in the northern states bordering Thailand it was earlier than that. (Refer to the Batu Bersurat discovered in Kuala Berang in Terengganu).

Is it not ironical that Malays call Chinese Muslims ‘mualaf’ when the Chinese were Muslims almost 1,000 years before the Malays even heard of Islam?

Okay, now take my family as an example. The Selangor Sultanate was founded in 1745. The first Sultan, Raja Lumu, migrated here from the Riau islands in Indonesia. By then, of course, the Arabs, Indians and Chinese had already been here 200 to 300 years, some even longer.

But these Arabs, Indians and Chinese were traders and merchants, not warriors or fighters, whereas the Bugis from Riau only knew one occupation – fighting and plundering. In short, they were pirates, which was a noble profession back in those days where even Queen Elizabeth the First knighted those English pirates who plundered Spanish ships.

In fact, the Bugis came here because of a sort of civil war in their home country. There was a fight over a girl and the son of the local Ruler was killed in that fight. So the offending party was exiled and had to leave Riau. And that was when they came here in the 1700s and founded the Selangor Sultanate.

Do not members of the Selangor Royal Family fighting with their Ruler and going into exile sound very familiar to you? Yes, 300 years ago this was the ‘tradition’ and still is in my case.

Invariably, the Bugis, being fighters, took Selangor as their territory by the sheer force of its ‘army’. None of the traders, who although were here earlier, would dare resist the Bugis who enjoyed killing (some Bugis still do today, as you may well be aware). But Selangor was under Perak patronage.

So Raja Lumu had to make a trip to Lumut in Perak to get crowned as the First Sultan by the then 17th or so Sultan of Perak. (Can’t remember if it was the 15th or 17th but it was around that). And he took the name of Sultan Salehuddin Shah.

Selangor eventually grew in prosperity. Actually, tin had already been discovered even before Raja Lumu became Sultan in 1745. And it was the Chinese who were working the tin mines. But now, since Selangor had a ‘government’, all the land in Selangor became ‘state property’. And therefore the Chinese had to get permission from the Sultan before they could mine for tin.

Around 100 years later, only when Sultan Abdul Samad took over as the Fourth Sultan of Selangor in 1859 (he was born in 1804) did they properly organize the tin industry. New areas were opened up in Ampang, Rawang, Kajang, and whatnot. And of course, all these tin mines were owned by the Sultan and members of his family — brothers, sons, nephews, etc.

The Malays, however, did not want to work those mines. Conditions were hard and diseases wiped out entire communities. Those who survived these brutal conditions were the exception rather than the rule. So they needed people who were desperate enough to work those tin mines and were prepared to take the risk and probably lose the ‘gamble’.

And who else to talk to if not the Chinese who had already been working those mines for hundreds of years?

So members of the Selangor Royal Family went into ‘joint venture’ with the Chinese, just like they did in Perak, another rich tin state. The Malay Royals would ‘arrange’ for the tin concessions and the Chinese would provide the labour force to work those concessions. In a way, you could say that the Selangor Royal Family were the first to ‘invent’ the Ali Baba system back in the 1800s, long before the New Economic Policy in 1970.

Anyway, to reach Ampang and those other surrounding rich tin areas, they had to travel up the Klang River. Raja Abdullah and Yap Ah Loy led the first expedition and they landed on the site where the Gombak River and Kelang River meet. The place where they landed is the site of the famous Masjid Jamek in Kuala Lumpur.

From there they marched overland through the jungle into Ampang. And thereafter Kuala Lumpur was never the same again. It prospered and continued to prosper over more than 200 years from the 1800s.

Yap Ah Loy bought up a lot of land in Kuala Lumpur and built his business empire. He opened bars, brothels and all sorts of businesses, legal as well as illegal (illegal by today’s standards though). Even the British Colonial ‘masters’ would patronise Yap Ah Loy’s brothels to sample the latest ‘China Dolls’ brought in from the mainland.

Of course, the normal customers would have to pay for these vices. The British masters, however, could enjoy all these services for free. Yes, even back in the 1800s the Chinese businessmen were already bribing the government officials.

Now, while Yap Ah Loy has been entered into the history books as the ‘Founder of Kuala Lumpur’, Raja Abdullah is never mentioned. The only thing associated with Raja Abdullah is that road in Kampong Baru that carries his name. Yap Ah Loy may have been the capitalist who opened up Kuala Lumpur.

But he was only able to do so because he had a ‘sleeping’ partner, Raja Abdullah, who gave him all this land to develop.

Okay, that is the Chinese story. So, yes, some did come here as prostitutes working for Yap Ah Loy. But that was incidental. Whenever frontier land is opened up the girls servicing these frontier-men follow – like in the Wild West of America. Would you say that the White immigrants to America were all prostitutes?

THE INDIANS IN MALAYSIA

Now, over to the Indians. As I said, the Indian (and Arab) traders and merchants first came here more than 500 years ago and even brought Islam to this country. But the ‘other’ Indians, the workers, came at about the time that Yap Ah Loy and Raja Abdullah were turning Kuala Lumpur into a thriving metropolis.

At that time, the British planters were in Ceylon (Sri Lanka today) growing cocoa. Then a plant disease spread throughout the island and all the trees died. But this disease not only killed all the trees but contaminated the land as well. This means the land was now useless and it was not a matter of just replanting.

Then the British looked at Malaya and decided that the conditions (land, climate, etc.) in Malaya were the same as in Ceylon. So they relocated their cocoa estates to Malaya. But there was no way they could get the Malays to work these cocoa estates. Furthermore, the Ceylonese workers were well trained and had been doing this work for years.

So, in the mid-1800s, the British brought the now unemployed Ceylonese cocoa workers to this country to work the Malayan cocoa plantations.

Then disaster struck. Brazil over-planted cocoa and this triggered a worldwide glut. It was no longer economical to plant cocoa. The price you would fetch for your cocoa was lower than your production cost. The British had no choice but to close down the cocoa plantations.

Around that time, the British, who had mischievously smuggled rubber seeds out of Brazil (which was a crime then), successfully grew rubber trees in the Kew Gardens in London. They also did some research and discovered a better way of planting rubber trees where the trees would give a better yield compared to the trees in Brazil. Rubber planting in Brazil was haphazard and not properly organized.

Since Malaya had to close down all its cocoa plantations and it now had idle plantation land and surplus Ceylonese workers, the British planters decided to switch over to rubber. And because the British took advantage of research and technology, the Malayan rubber trees were more productive and profitable. Eventually, Malaya dislodged Brazil as the top rubber producer in the world.

So, from the mid-1800s to around 1920, Indians and Chinese came to Malaya in great numbers. This was more or less the second wave of mass migration. And it was for economic reasons and to provide the labour for jobs that the Malays would never do. But there were earlier and other migrations as well.

For example, around the late 1800s and early 1900s, the British set up English medium schools for Malays. One such school, the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, was a school exclusive for sons of Royalty and the Malay elite. Invariably, they needed schoolteachers who were proficient in the English language. And India offered a good source of English medium schoolteachers (Malays could not speak English yet at that time).

On the commercial side, there were many Indian businesses, workers and whatnot. But there was no way they could qualify for loans from British owned banks. So the Indians from the Chettiar community came here to set up money-lending businesses to service their community.

When the Malayan rail network was being developed, where else to get the workers if not from the country with the largest railway in the world, India?

WE ARE ALL MALAYSIANS

    4. Aku geram sgt bila org x faham sejarah tapi nak menulis sejarah. Kedudukan org melayu x boleh d samakan dgn org china & india..kenapa? Bangsa melayu walau dr mana dtg nya itu x penting..yg PENTING..siapa yg mengasaskan kerajaan MELAYU d sini? Walaupun nanti ada yg mendakwa parameswara dr indonesia..TAPI..boleh ke dia jadi raja kalau x de org melayu jadi rakyatnya? British pon mengakui kedaulatan kerajaan d sini sbg kerajaan MELAYU. Apa masalah??? Pedagang cina & india dr dulu pun mengakui kedaulatan raja2 melayu..dan mereka turut patuh d bwah pmth kerajaan melayu sejak zmn kesultanan MELAYU Melaka lagi..malah pendatang2 cina & india yg d bawa british. W'pon masa itu mereka x d anggap sbg rakyat dlm kerajaan MELAYU tapi sbg ORANG ASING. Satu lgi tuduhan knapa org melayu dulu x suka bekerja..sebab sblum kdtngan org asing..org melayu tiada perasaan/ semangat brsaing. Org melayu brasa telah cukup dgn apa yg ada..ada rumh..ada sawh & ternakan..org melayu tidak materialistik. Segala2nya ada d sekeliling ... berbeza dgn bangsa asing yg dtg..rata2 memang papa kedana..tiada apa2..jadi bangsa asing brlumba2 menguasai ekonomi..sehingga akhirnya org melayu yg ketinggalan. Jadi jgn lupa bangsa MELAYU lah yg mengasaskan KERAJAAN d sini...org melayu yg entah dari mana dtg nya yg menyokong raja2 mereka..yg taat setia dan rela mempertahankan kerajaan mereka dari dulu hingga kini...jadi jgn nak mengaku sbg rakyat jika tiada kesetiaan kpd raja & negara. HARAP MAKLUM.

Even in Australia (where I am at now), when the government is clearly held by caucasians - they admit that -they- are immigrants.

The Aboriginies are given so much rights to the land and other immigrants of different races are treated the SAME as the average caucasian. There's no bullshit NEP here. They aren't as egoistic as to CLAIM their supremacy just because they made their governments here. So, your point is simply invalid.

"Around 300 BC, they were pushed inland by the Deutero-Malays, an Iron Age or Bronze Age people descended partly from the Chams of Cambodia and Vietnam. The first group in the peninsula to use metal tools, the Deutero-Malays were the direct ancestors of today's Malaysian Malays, and brought with them advanced farming techniques"

    5. First I am a Malay, and I agree that all of us except the Orang Aslis are pendatangs. Second I must stress that 19th century Malays refusing to do 'menial' work should not be branded as lazy, in fact it's the other way around that they have enough skills and competences in many areas which would make working in tin mines etc unnecessary. To understand this, please read Al-Atas' Myth of The Lazy Native, maybe the best history book covering the times leading to modern Malaysia, MOE should make this required reading at schools. (http://www.citizens-international.org/ci2012/http://www.citizens-international.org/ci2012/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/the-myth-of-lazy-native.pdf)

New Malays however, who refuse to open up their universities, who keep dumbing down their school system, who are too cowardly to compete on merit and are always reliant on govt help, are actually lazy.

      What a shame.

I have study hard, self study about English, theist, atheist, psychology, philosophy (I am not good but I study). I know critical thinking. I acknowledge if I was wrong.(sometimes I stubborn)(but it human nature). Yet it all still in English. Here in Malaysia, Indonesia or Brunei, people are still ignorant because we Malay speak Malay language. There are still many English illiterate in this country, I don’t understand all of them (English word), but I’m trying. Don’t dismiss us because of our ancestor. In the end this is Malaysia, and our official language is Malay, I still haven’t found many sophisticated, psychology, philosophy in English word has been translated to Malay (or for it to have been use). It all comes to language we use, culture and custom. I am glad if I can discuss with Chinese or Indian, but it hard, because the first language I use is Malay. So, maybe I seem ignorant and naive, but I hope there is improvement on Malay language itself for people to open their mind. Please if you are Chinese or Indian, please don’t a biased about it, I hope I can befriend you too, and discuss this rational matter. In Malay I would be glad.

    1. You are like that because of our education system. I am over 40 years old. I started primary school in Malaysia in the late 70s when the education system was being converted from English medium to Malay medium.

But even then, by the time I reached secondary school, practically all the Malay friends that I had were still able to speak, understand and write English if not very well then at least functionally. And these were not the "rich, privileged" Malays. Many of them came to school in the Yayasan Selangor buses.

Then when I left school in the mid 80s till now, I see not only the standard of English dropping but also of the overall standard of education.

No one is looking down on anyone here. If you feel that you are disadvantaged because you cannot speak English well, then how do you explain all the Chinese and Indians who also cannot speak English well who have become successful in their careers or businesses? The problem is not language. The problem is attitude and belief.

The only people putting you Malays down and keeping you down are you Malays yourselves. That and the government that wants to CONTINUE making you believe that you NEED them to be successful in life. And perhaps that is why there are more Chinese and Indians who are successful financially. It is because we Chinese and Indians don't get ANYTHING given to us from the government, and we basically have to struggle for what we want in a system that gives all the advantages to the Malays and non to everyone else

    3. Sir,
I admire you for your efforts in trying to improve your English. The issue is not "the Malay mindset" . The real issue is this, UMNO is desperate to cling to power. PAS is trying to get more power (I think they are talking about Hudut etc) . This is not necessarily good for Malaysia. Approximately about 60% Muslim only. Both political parties will play the race and religion card. When they use the non-muslims as the "bogeyman" this will only end in disaster for Malaysia. If a foreign power moves in to try and "take over" , then can Malaysia depend on 100% of its people defending her. ??? Of couse UMNO CONNECTED politicians & "loyar buruk" politicians will then question the loyalty & blame the non-muslims for not defending Malaysia like in the Lahad Datu affair. Many non-malay Malaysians want to serve the country. If they have difficulty getting into the services or don't get the same promotion prospects as Malays get then you cannot expect them to serve like a "hamba" (some Malay words I am not good at but I will try). No one wants to be a slave forever. You cant expect them to suddenly step up to the front line when the enemy appears. Malays have to be what is called inclusive in the selection of non-malays in the civil service. Not like the UMNO politicians shouting "apa lagi china mahu?" I had to leave the country of my birth, Malaysia To go luar negeri to cari makan." In 1971. I wish you well !!!!

This will take the country backwards and divide the citizens.. Please ALL MALAYSIANS unite and fight the RUBBISH UMNO and his CRONIES dish out from thin air. What they are trying to do is to divide the citizens so that they can rule. Knowingly the people are not ignorant anymore, so they keep spinning all the RUBBISH. 16. A little biased article perhaps ignorant.
Truth is until Portuguese took over Malacca and developed the trading outpost into a thriving city most visitors, traders or foreign chinese and indian workers would have never settled.
Without the British later further developing the other straits settlements most chinese and indians would have never been attracted to to the malaysian peninsula in search of better lives... I cannot help to find it ridiculous how people who migrated to the straits settlements precisely because of western economic development, and then stayed mostly as illegal immigrants later refer with disdain to the same westerners who gave them those opportunities.... this is particularly ridiculous fro singapore chinese who have been brainwashed to believe they alone developed a swamp into a thriving not racist city.

Had westerners had been as racist as current inhabitants of peninsula malaysia, there would be no indians, chinese and only living in the peninsula.

    7. The British needed workers because they did not want the Malays involved because they believed that if they developed they would one day kick them out. They use migrant workers so that they could kick them out when it suited them. The Chinese and Indians because of their success from hard work became too powerful for the British to move those who had put down roots in the country. Keep in mind that it was the British plan not to grant the Chinese and Indians citizenship when they decided to grant Malaya independence. They conceded on this because Chin Peng was causing so much problem for them and they needed to split the Chinese from supporting him. You could say the Chin Peng so much reviled by many was the man who won the non-Malays citizenship rights. The British were cunning - they felt that if the Malays were in control, their interest would be better protected. By the way I an neither Chinese or Indian.

Look around at the buildings, your food, traditional clothing and language. Even English is spoken with some Chinese and Indian and Malay words thrown in. Malaysia, just like US is a product of many cultures. Resulting in something truly unique and amazing. Please don't let politicians with their own agendas let you believe anything less.

  19. Thank you sir, for the much needed history lesson. While in secondary school, we covered the history of our founding fathers quite thoroughly. Islamic history and Malaysian history were seen as equally important. I wonder what the kids are made to cover these days. To complement your history lesson, this proud 'anak Melaka' / Baba Nyonya / 8th Generation 'pendatang' wants to chime in with a bit of our Malaccan history too :) The founding of Melaka pre-dates the founding of all other cities in M'sia.

Malacca was a fishing village inhabited by local Malays (also considered 'pendatang' as they were not Orang Asli in origin). Malacca was founded by Parameswara, also known as Iskandar Shah the last Raja of Singapura (present day Singapore) following a Majapahit attack in 1377. He found his way to Malacca around 1400.

In collaboration with allies from the sea-people (orang laut), the wandering proto-Malay privateers of the Straits, he established Malacca as an international port by compelling passing ships to call there, and establishing fair and reliable facilities for warehousing and trade. So, working with other 'pendatang(s), the first Sultan of Malaya actually invited other 'pendatang(s)' to come and trade.

Because of its strategic location, Malacca was an important stopping point for Laksamana Cheng Ho's fleet. To enhance relations, Hang Li Po, according to local folklore a daughter of the Ming Emperor of China, arrived in Malacca, accompanied by 500 attendants, to marry Sultan Manshur Shah who reigned from 1456 until 1477. Her attendants married locals and settled mostly in Bukit China.

Conclusion: Parameswara (the original 'pendatang') invited other pendatangs (Arabs, Indians, Chinese etc) to Malacca to trade. Then another ruling pendatang called Sultan Manshur Shah needed Chinese protection, so married a pendatang who brought 500 pendatangs with her. Her bodyguards (Hang Tuah etc) became the most heroic pendatangs in our history.

Ganga Nagara 150 BCE follow by Langkasuka 14 AD follow by Sri Vijaya to Angkor than Majapahit before Malaka. Sang Nila utama or Paramesuara is a Hindu & a descendent of Sri Vijaya Empire until he convert to Muslim because he wanted to form an allied kingdom under China Ming dynasty. That was the condition applied by ONG SAM POH ( Zheng He) or Haj Mahmud @ Ma He a Muslim Pilgrim who sail across the world to spread Islam. The beauty of the true Malaysian history is you can’t find it in Malaysia but its recorded in India, China and country surrounding it. The Portuguese, Dutch, British & Japanese distort it but not as bad as the Ultra Malay in the 70' onward, The dismantle it and reassemble in their own version. Malaysia Boleh (Putar Belit)

  30. A country succeeds when it's population succeeds. Succesful people are the basis of a succesful country. Governments rely on their country's production and ability to trade with other countries. Even countries that are rich in natural resources rely on the conversion of said resources into usable and or tradeable products.
Regardless of history and who is 'pendatang' or 'sudah/tengah duduk di sini' (duduk, with it's numerous meanings being used intentionally), a smart and forward thinking government will drive and reward the segments of positive economic producing population to ensure prosperity for its country and population at large. Yes?
A simple and basic fact to consider then...even with so many who evade taxes, if you really want to talk about which origin of population (race of people) should be encouraged, rewarded and held in higher regard, then consider which origin of population produces for this country and pays the highest amounts of taxes...
Smack that with a short bendy stick!

  31. We are all pengdatang! Even the orang asli!. It is human evolution process to migrate and intermix. The different is the timing. Take Australia and USA as example, the whole nation is governed by pengdatang and the difference as compare to Malaysia is the ATTITUDE caused by racism. To other countries, we are all Malaysian but our government insist on racism. Only in Malaysia our government insist on classification of races and religion. We used to be so proud of our multiracial societies that were the jewel in the British Empire but now everything is governed by race and religion. Take the government [Barisan National] for example, even the whole concept of component parties are racial based. Ever wonder why the Chinese are migrating? Why the brains drain? That is the reason. Ever wonder why the American can become so strong and British Empire collapsed? It is because the American gone thru a civil war to eradicate racism and slavery.
I can go on and on about this topic, but the real Malaysian will never ever be proud of Malaysia until all its citizen realized that race and religion are INSIGNIFICANT. I am afraid that I will never witness the day when the citizen of this nation can PROUDLY declare themselves to the world that we are MALAYSIAN, just as the AMERICAN did and still do. That will only happen when the chinese, indian, selani, muslim, christians, and the malays forget about racism and religion and get their acts together. Then we are truly MALAYSIAN.

  39. Please be clear about a couple of things today:
    1. Most Malays have no idea what's really going on. The ones living in small towns and villages have only their religious leaders and village/town elders to tell them. Of course, there is mainstream media. The commonality here is UMNO controls all and any information/misinformation. You could argue that these folks can/should find things out themselves but until you've lived in their world, I'd ask you to hold your tongue. I have relatives that live in villages where only a few homes have TVs and they are 20-year old boxes, not your fancy LCDs. It is a hard life but they've never complained until UMNO told them their hard life is because of the Chinese and Indians. They don't understand why or how but they are starting to get upset.
    2. The only Malays that prosper are they ones raping my country and my fellow countrymen. These are also known as the UNMO elite and their buddies. I call them Malays only loosely because they do not represent all Malays. I will never call them Muslim or Islam followers because what they do everyday is haram and may incur severe punishments in Islamic teachings. It is these UNMO elite that are stepping on the heads of my fellow Malays to keep them uninformed, uneducated, poor and angry. It is these UNMO elites that sow seeds of hatred and fear across ALL races for while they are mostly not intellects, they are smart enough to know it is much easier to dominate when the populace is in-fighting. Sadly, all races are falling deep into this cleverly laid out yet very simple trap.

History lessons are invaluable, truly. However, it is only one part. It tells us how we got here. What happens next is up to us.

    1. Please, go and penetrate yourself. You need to know the difference between race, ethnic and religion. What is the point of changing names, when you still need to write in the "Race" column? So you are asking us to change race, or just to change name for your liking? If justice is guaranteed, then I don't mind doing that (note the difference between justice and equality; I chose the word which is more appropriate: justice). Furthermore, I've mastered the Malay language till the point that I can speak in pure Malay accent (passed your first so called requirement). No offense, but, I'd just call you a piece of shit. I have no qualms about the necessity to speak Malay in order to stay here, but to change our names? Our identities? Please go back to school and learn the difference between 'bangsa' and 'etnik'. Do you know that it is not compulsory to change your name; if you're converting from a 'kafir' religion to Islam? I'm a Chinese from the Hakka descent. That's my given name by ethnic, but still, I'm willing to tell you; that I'm a human first, Malaysian second, and Chinese third (compare this with what is your priority). So just because I'm not willing to change my name, I'm a 'pendatang'; and deserve to be treated like second class citizens? Leaving history and the past aside, I was born here. Even my late grandfather was born here. From that generation up till now, the progress of my family tree is just from poverty till below average income (contradicts with most Malay mentality who thinks all Chinese are rich). I'm 24 years old and have yet to leave Malaysia. So the question is, am I a 'pendatang'?

  46. It's still comes down how does human behave.
At the past era, shelter, food and security was a premium. Hence, when the residence in Malaya have enough of these, they are happy with it.
However, not all of them able to survive/make a living. They have no choice to explore other countries.

As what I studied at secondary school, Chinese are merchants that sold silk at Malacca Port and Indians sold their spices(very valuable at that time), and Muslims sold their products(can't remember) while they spread their religion beliefs to the others.
Malaya is a country that doesn't have 4 seasons and less mother nature disasters hence, it is an ideal place for merchants to settle down. It is a port, not much weather problem, less disasters.
But why doesn't they choose Indonesia or other neighbor countries? well, they are not a famous trading port as Malacca. hence, economically it is not an ideal place to settle down.

But why does Malays have misunderstanding that they are lazy, greedy and so on?

Well, as a nature of merchants, they are very used to competitions and they able to survive through that. But the Malays are not exposed to that.

However, Malays are not ignorant. Since business isn't their strength, but using their fighting abilities and early arrival status, they can rule the state and alliance with the merchants by giving protections to the merchants (merchants do not want any wars or fights or whatsoever).

Human beings have flaws, human are not perfect right? Everyone sees this opportunity. And other people wants to obtain this power. Greed comes in to play. They will do anything to keep their powers.

So, who to blame? Nobody should. No one is at fault.

Just my two cents. And my english are not really good :P

Changing name and speak fluent Malay language gets first class citizen treatment? Man, do you have many Malay students get poor results in written and spoken Malay at school due to their local slang?

Before you hit out to people, please look at yourself at the mirror first!

  54. you say arabs and gujarati muslims brought Islam to Malaya? They both follow mainly hanafi sect right? So how come the Malays are Shafies?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Bro,

I'm not really too sure, as there is no evidence to prove how Islam was brought to Malaysia. However, in my opinion, it might have been brought in by the Chinese (from China). I have no evidence, but it is a possibility. Or perhaps, it might be brought in by the Arabs and Gujarati Muslims first, and Chinese Muslims next, and over the lapse of time, perhaps Muslim Malay scholars and peoples adapted Shafie sect? Anything is possible bro.

I am not a Muslim, so I don't really have the right to talk much. But however, in the Chinese history (China), Muslims have contributed a lot (Just an example to show the difference of religion's in the past and present). It is ironic seeing that religious harmony from a millennium up to a few centuries ago was way better than the religious harmony we have now. 59. If this is some kind of factual points ... the whole article should be based on facts with evidence with no contamination of opinions from the writer.

I would like to go back here to this line
"In fact, many till today still do not understand Islam after more than 500 years."

How you going to defend this ? This line is clearly off from a "history lesson" .

There is no evidence to support this. If you are going to say those days people didn't understand at that time.. its fairly understood given the fact that the converted like a wholesale clearance of baptism.
But till today they don't understand sounds rather vague and weak point ... as a matter of fact .. a poor opinion .

  60. Upon reading all such comments, I can say that collectively there are mix reactions in relation to the article. Either ways, I have learned a little more from what i know. However, as one is to usually not foresee what is to happen tomorrow, hence the best that all we can do at times is to reminisce the past and plan for the future (call me simple minded). I remember the sweet memories when I was young, the days of the "walkman" or "yoyo", the NKOTB and or the Beetles. In school, mucking and mixing around together with all our friends, we teased but we fought too in the spirit of sports were our daily affair and heck-we even mix and eat together during "provocative periods" but with due respect. Those days, all of us call ourselves as friends, brothers and family- with no colour, ethnic and social status boundaries. If those days are the glory days, the "muhibbah days" I think we should do some reflection on what has happened from then on forth.

I myself, a baba, have a documented family history right up from the first chinaman who came in the 1700s, before he married a local. I know of peranakan's who have a documented existence since the 1500s, tracing every male issue since the first chinaman.

  65. I am an Indian and have a couple of Indian Malaysian friends, some of them 3rd or 4th generation in Malaysia. I remember one of my friend expressing his worry about not getting equal opportunities in Malaysia in spite of good, professional education (Medicine degree) he got from India, thanks but no thanks to the "Bhumiputhra" concept. I did not pay much attention to that then (it was about 40 years back) but now, after reading the main article and subsequent discussions, I understood the problems to some extent.
So,what with my limited knowledge and comprehension I think I can venture some opinions of mine - no offence meant to any one. The so-called original Malays, even to this day, are just satisfied being pampered and sit idle and not bothered to try hard and come up in life - he can come up even without that hard work, thanks to the present day politicians and politics. As they say, ignorance is bliss; if you don't know, you are happy, not bothered till the problems land on the head sooner or later.
Without proper English and international exposure, it would be very difficult to stand up in the present day competition. The 'native' malays are not worried. It would be left to those who came there for a living (immigrants) to struggle and come up. And they know the value of hard work and focus on the better achievements of life. Their children also usually follow the parents path to come up. Once these people are seen having better life, then the others/natives start pulling them down, if possible, by using political power. These 'natives' don't understand that the interests and lockers/bank accounts of these bigwigs are full just because of the people's ignorance. How? Because of the ignorance and religious pressures, they never ask questions and are happy with those small dog biscuits thrown by those in power. No questions asked, no fears; they can do as they please.
In fact, this is the same story any of the 'Old City Population' is facing, including my own, in South India. In the name of religion, they won't limit the size of their family; bring them in to this world, at about 10 years of age, put one in a cycle repair shop; one in a motor garage, another in a grocery shop, one in the bus stand, another in a "Pan Shop", one more in a hotel as a cleaner another a pick-pocket or criminal later on, another in a club as a boy etc, etc. Not bothered about good education and studies; take some money or get brainwashed by the religious heads and vote enmasse in the name of religion and sect, electing the same wolves and cunning fellows. And these so-called leaders are happy, because they are not asked any questions and can get away with whatever thy do. HOW CAN THEY EXPECT TO PROSPER?
But at least now, at my place, the trend is showing signs of improvement. One started understanding the value of hard work, education, exposure to competition etc.,
I hope it would be the same with the "Malaysians" there. (I am using the word "Malaysians" here deliberately. It indicates the spirit of one-ness, unity and fraternity and friendship including ALL - the Chinese, Indians - every one.) May you all prosper by the grace of God.

  76. These are valid and invalid points I am sure , from among all that anyone tries her/his best to put to me, the reader.
There is nothing in my life experience teaching me that race issues and their arguments are taken up and swallowed for useful digestion.
I lived in Malaya, then went on to breathe more of the same air when it becomes Malaysia, with Sikhs, Malays, Portuguese, Indians, and Chinese( I am one) growing into herds of one colour pretending to be brotherly-sisterly to other herds.
It makes me mad at politics of the 50 years influencing and altering my taste for culture, and I don't want to live alone happy for my protected mind not yours.
Then I didn't care what animal you are.
I get no more daily influence from what distortions in papers, what those lack-of-attention politicians have to say.
    I hate no more.
    I love more.
When politicians dose you with fire for your ears and pricks your heart, you are possessed. You go talking endlessly
    to score points.
You who are Chinese, Indian and Malay: can't you see goodness in us all? You are sincere when you wish me well
tho' we have never met before. I am your help in the middle of your unfortunate car mishap. You are my sister, you are my brother.
Look at the tired-monotonous faces of politics with a corner of your eye, don't be interested in the devils' speeches.
But pity his soul so very empty; it's full of air, but leave him to discover love. We have love, yes! we love you no matter, and
you love me, come 14th GE or any other number.
Our faith in love for you and you and you takes us to our ends, let politicians who befriends devils bring hantu to themselves.

I will love you no matter the storm of the national agenda. I care if you reciprocate. I care if you influence others similarly.
We find love in us what politicians call nation-building by mistake.
And what politicians call patriotic of us, we say, " Lay off! Go get a life".

  78. So it has showed that the Malays are lazy since the early days before Malaysia was formed. They don't want to work in mines and plantations. Just wanted freebies without working hard... just like what is happening in today's Malaysia. So they twisted the history to suit their agenda to continnue with the lazy lifestyle, by creating the racial hatred against the Indians and Chinese. So when the Malays now wanted to call the Chinese or the Indians to "balik China or India" better think twice, they can also asked you guys to return to whereever shit hole you came from.

  80. So Yap Aloy opened up prostitution.. so the "Ketinggalan Malays" so to speak.. left out on this prostitution business...

I really like how this article tries to justify prostitution and illegal business..

1)From what i can understand from here.. the Malay government actually gave opportunity to the Chinese to do what ever they want, freedom to conduct their business which ever.. which part of this article actually mention Malays are evil.. the Chinese have been given great freedom by the Malays to even conduct their own shady business... despite talking about how bad it is to work in the Tin mines.. not to complain about work, but the profit yield by the Tin mine way exceed the burdens.. and yet there mines were worked on by Ceylonese perhaps? and then later recall the British also took over the Tin mining industry..

2)They say tin mining existed way before.. well thats fine.. but during the 1800 migration of chinese and indians.. why suddenly there is a colonization of immigrants in this country? If they want to work in this country.. they have the permit.. but that doesnt grant them citizenship instantly.. does America give citizenship to Mexicans based on work permit?

    3) Islam was brought by the Chinese and Indians.. that is true.. but the Sultan initiated conversion of Islam from the Arabs... and to say Chinese and Indians.. also brought their own religion too.. so whats is the problem with religion here? Is this article trying to say that Islam is a bad thing... because you cant sleep with prostitutes, and exploit ppl in illegal business and service foreigners?

Seems to me this article can clearly describe the situation of Malaysia today.. the shady business of prostutition, drugs and piracy... can all be linked to the culture of the Chinese living off on foreign land..

The more i try to decipher this article.. the more i feel there are a lot of loopholes in this whole poorly written English and nonacademic in its historian presentation..

  87. As mentioned by RPK, malay refused to work as miners, planters n railways builders could be they are lazy and their brains are only good for plundering others wealth, hence descendent of pirates.

And the traits and genes being passed down till today. Facts, today malay only know how to survive on government subsidy, aids and other so called "bumiputra" privileges that they hijacked and plundered from the original natives of malaysia. In addition, the malay have added in a new form of plundering they called "derma" (donation).

Malay are so lazy to the point, government needs to lower all grades and points in order for them to pass examinations and be absorbed into government services. Private sector has no choice but to employ them because of bumiputra quotas.

In a nutshell not only malay are lazy but maybe their brains are not as superior compare to other races.

Lastly it is good to know that there are someone who dares to remind malay they are actually a bangsat race

Good research on the background of Malaya and the migration of Chinese and Indians here. You have failed to highlight the fact that King Rajendra Chola was here in Kedah over 1000 years ago. The name Malaya which in Tamil is Malaiyur was given by this empire that ruled this region including Indonesia and Thailand. The name on one of the street in the KL business district Raja Chulan is the father of Rajendra Chola whose name is Raja Raja Cholan. There are temples ruins in Jeniang Kedah which proves the timeline in which this took place till today.

  95. This is a great explanation.

I should add more: Doesn't it strike people as strange that India has tens if not hundreds of different races, yet most of the people in Malaysia are predominantly from Tamil Nadu?

This is due to the following: In the 1870s, there was a massive famine in South India centred around Tamil Nadu. The estimated mortality from this famine was around 5.5 million. As a result of this famine, huge amounts of agricultural workers left India for countries around the world including Malaysia.
