The NEP never corrected this-it gave UMNO and its cronies working with the Royalty a bigger share of the pie. The farmers are still poor and they will remain like that for another 50 years.
Legislation has curbed free speech. Internal Security Act, the Printing and Publishing Act, the Sedition Act, the Societies Act and Police Act among many others-protects the government from criticism. It removed the opportunity for the public participate in democracy. (It still continues today when the Federal Government refuses residents of Penang to elect their own choices to run the local authorities-no democracy!
(b) The collapse of education in Malaysia. Malaysian Universities are so backward. Schools have gotten worse-Gone are the days of Victoria Institution and ST John’s. English has been rolled backed-we are falling back very quickly and this is a fatal policy.
In the UK, Australia, and the United States-tens of thousands of Chinese students from China are mastering English on a daily basis while the Malay/UMNO government is pushing the national language down many a throat of Malaysian leading them to be handicapped. The lack of teachers to teach Science and Math in English speaks for itself. We are going backwards!
(c) The NEP policy was not one of affirmative action but racial discrimination-which segregated the races and destroyed good race relations which existed in the 1960s. Rich Malays can buy houses at discounted prices but poor Malays can’t afford it.
To stay in power the ruling government closed a blind eye to corruption. Like an ugly serpent not only did it rear its ugly head, it became the legs and hands of UMNO and the government. Since 1980-the Bank Bumiputra Scandal (Carririan group) to Perwaja Steel and continuing, billions of taxpayers Ringgit have been lost to thieves and robbers with impunity. Looking around in Malaysian cities one now realizes how MB TOYO has a house (s) worth millions of Ringgit at his salary while in some kampongs there are no proper facilities in the 21st century.
(d) The Constitution is outdated and needs to be amended to bring it to the 21st Century. Never again can we allow someone like Mahathir Mohamed to stay in power for 22 years as Prime Minister. We are not a third world country and don’t want dictators who destroyed the country.
The Malay, Chinese and Indian positions must be examined. Any policy that will help the Malay but will undevelop non-Malays must be abandoned! Racism has no place in Malaysia-anyone suggesting that there cannot be a dialogue on race and religion should be carefully monitored because of the creeping racism in Malaysian society.
The UMNO leadership will always pamper to the masses. To do so, just give them what they want i.e blanket passes in exams from school to university, guaranteed work after school, guaranteed promotion at the workplace esp government debts., plenty of easy money from government handouts. If there is not enough money in the bank, the government will borrow money to give out as dividends etc.
No matter what is cooked up, no man can out smart the nature. When NEP brings the country to the brink of collapse eventually, all the blind masses will see and wake up to a new beginning. A painful beginning I should say, but a good start from there on. The signs of awakening has already been triggered
I have least hope on Najib will do the right thing for Malaysia and not for UMNO.
