Anwar: RPK statement does not free Najib from Altantuya case

April 15, 2011

KUCHING, April 15 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim insisted today that the recent revelations made by controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin do not vindicate Datuk Seri Najib Razak of his involvement in the Altantuya Shaaribuu murder.

“If it is on the question of the statutory declaration (SD) made by RPK (Raja Petra), then let’s bring up the SD done by PI Bala (private investigator P. Balasubramaniam), read it and let them explain.

“Do not tell me Najib, from one RPK statement, is free from the accusation.

“A person has died and two have been sentenced to hang... people are asking — who gave them the orders? What is the mens rea?” Anwar (picture) told reporters here.

The Pakatan Rakyat de facto leader also hinted his suspicion that the issue was raised in time for the Sarawak polls but pledged it would not shift Pakatan Rakyat’s focus from the campaign.

He challenged the ruling administration to continue its attacks on him only on April 17, a day after polling day tomorrow.

“Tomorrow is the Sarawak polls. The timing is perfect. But I want to remind my friends in Sarawak... focus on the polls. Focus on the leadership in Sarawak.

“The day after we discuss Anwar’s leadership. For one more day, focus on how the people of Sarawak are about to determine their government — do not shift focus,” he said.

Anwar, however, insisted that his refusal to respond to Raja Petra’s statements did not mean he was avoiding the issue.

“I am not avoiding... no. On the 17th continue to attack Anwar like usual. But now, we focus on this,” he said.
