The MIC should use the money on Tamil schools instead of organising New Year celebrations, says PKR

KUALA LUMPUR : The recent Indian New Year celebrations was a waste of government and corporate funds and the money instead should have been channelled to help the Indian community.

Malacca PKR vice-prersident G Rajendran claimed that the celebration was organised to win back the Indian community.

Last Friday, MIC with Astro organised the new year celebration at the Mines Resort City Convention Hall.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor, together with a crowd of 12,000, watched the song and dance show.

“The money spent could have been used to help the Tamil schools and it is about time the MIC realised that Tamil schools have been discriminated under Umno’s leadership.

“In Malaysia, there are 526 Tamil schools, of which 376 received partial monetary assistance and the remaining 150 full government support.

“The MIC wants to make all Tamil schools to be fully aided but that is not enough. They should be included in the Education Ministry grand plan for schools,” Rajendran said.

He said the ministry has seven plans for all type of schools. They are high performance schools, cluster schools, smart schools, vision schools, premier schools, “Pintar” schools and trust schools.

Only 10 Tamil schools were chosen to participate in the seven plans. Out of this, six took part in the vision school plan which the Chinese community had refused to participate.

He said Pintar school is a programme for schools which lack basic infrastructure.

“A total of 212 schools are taking part in the Pintar programme. But not even one Tamil school has been included in the plan despite the fact that over 70% of Tamil schools in the country are having infrastructure problems,” he said.

“From this, it is clear the federal government has no intention of helping Tamil schools. MIC should be using large corporations such as Astro, Maxis and Celcom to help Tamil schools instead of wasting their money on song and dance celebrations,” Rajendran said.
