I refer to the statement by Umno Information chief Ahmad Maslan that Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim must prove that the allegations made by sex video peddler Shazryl Eskay Abdullah is false.
His statement is further proof that Umno has a hand in the sex video conspiracy against Anwar. Ahmad Maslan has repeatedly made false, unsupported and irresponsible statements in relation to the sex video conspiracy, intended to tarnish the reputation of Anwar Ibrahim and attempt to prejudice the public against him.
His baseless statements should be read in light of the knowledge that Umno leaders are able to direct and/or influence police investigations. They have frequently and unlawfully used this power against the political opposition.
Notorious examples are the politically motivated prosecutions of Anwar and Lim Guan Eng in 1998. It should also be remembered that in the now ongoing Sodomy II case, the complainant Saiful Bukhari Azlan met Umno president and Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak regarding his allegations against Anwar.
This was highly inappropriate and suspicious conduct by a sitting Prime Minister. Ahmad Maslan’s statements now should be seen in this context. They are intended to send a clear message to the police on Umno and the government’s wishes as regards the outcome of the sex video investigation.
It should be noted that Ahmad Maslan is also a federal Deputy Minister and speaks on behalf of the Prime Minister’s department. We call upon Umno and the government:
a) to immediately stop using the police and prosecution agencies for political purposes;
b) to cease their engagement in dirty politics and the fabrication of sordid political conspiracies against political opponents;
