The Indian dilemma - short memory

I bought the Hindraf DVD outlining its blueprint for the betterment of Indians on Thaipusam day and watched it along with my mother. My mom always watches the programme Vizhuthugal on Astro Vaanavil and TV2 Tamil news where BN blows it’s own trumpet that it is a caring government doling out goodies and the proposed national celebration of Ponggal. I stopped listening to and reading mainstream news a long time ago whilst my mother depends on it for information of the goings on.

Basically, in that DVD, Hindraf outlined its six-point blueprint during the group’s fifth year anniversary celebration last November. With all that said and heard, one day my mom came up to me and said that BN seems to care for Indians with all the feel good festivities organising and goodies galore and told me that she would vote for BN since BN seems to have repented. She is also sizably concerned about riotous skirmishes that might take place if PR takes seat in Putrajaya.

Now, this is the problem of Indians here, the Indian dilemma, prevalent especially among the aged and those in rural areas, my mother included. We tend to settle for temporary provisions and succumb to gratification when our festivals are given hype. We have a short memory and are driven by gratitude which is knowingly preyed on by the ruling coalition. And, fear mongering is another factor that would make unthinking Indians become BN’s vote repository again.

The dilemma of Indians here is that they are happy if they are given a fish a day rather than learning the skill of fishing and upgrade the skill in order to develop themselves and BN is capitalising on this stumble of ours. This trait alone befits the claim that Indians are pathetic beggars. Why get angry when others call us beggars when we act like beggars?

Indians here don’t have ahead of time and critical thinking. Our kids don’t get seats in public universities scholarships despite being more than qualified, their spirits, crushed, ambition, quelled, potential and capability, repressed and yet for a meager RM500, a packet of rice, few cans of sardine and other groceries and a nationwide Ponggal celebration and we are more than willing to lick the boots of BN goons and cast our votes to the very political entity that denied our existence and our contribution to the building Malaysia for the past 55 long years.

These goodies galore and the celebrations are nothing but kiss ass gestures to gain the canvass of the Indian community back for BN. We must ask ourselves, why only now BN has come up with the term Nambikei and is giving us a literal yet non sustainable windfall? What were they smoking in the period of 55 years of rule? Why only after failure of getting 2/3rd majority is BN paying attention to Indians and why is the handouts parcel executed so close to the general election?

Is it because they had a sudden enlightenment? Is it because they have turned over a new leaf and sincerely want to serve the Indian community? No! BN is doing this for its own political survival and this Nambikei thingy and the splurge are their 11th hour attempts. It is do or die. Najib wants to preserve his position as PM; that is his only motive.

If Najib is truly sincere to uplift the Indian community sincerely he should have implemented long term nitty gritty uplifting policies and supplementary monetary aid the minute he got sworn in as our PM, in genuine

Attempted 'murder' of PDRM

Rupanya Mahathir Sudah Tahu Pakatan Rakyat Akan Menang PRU 13..

- Addin

Najib perlu berundur Mahathir kata..

ALOR SETAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today launched the 1Malaysia Licence Aid (BL1M) programme to make it easier for youths to obtain the motorcycle licence at RM199 instead of RM350 or more.
"Many youngsters have motorcycles, bought for them by their parents, but they do not have a licence," he said at the launch during a gathering of Kedah youths at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Suka Menanti, here.

The BL1M programme comes under the purview of the Urban Affairs Secretariat (SHEB) of the Barisan Nasional Youth and targets to help 500,000 applicants from among youngsters to obtain the licence.

Besides the cheaper rate, the programme also offers several other benefits, such as free computerised test if the applicant fails and has to re-sit the test.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin had said that the BL1M was open to citizens between the ages of 17 and 40 and the fees charged covered the application for the licence, photograph, practical training lessons, and computerised theory and practical tests at the driving institute.

Video MP Loh’ promises another exposé of judiciary fixing.

Lisa J. Ariffin | January 31, 2013
Kelana Jaya MP Loh Gwo Burne who shot to fame with the VK Lingam video says he has another one on judiciary fixing.
PETALING JAYA: Kelana Jaya MP Loh Gwo Burne, who became an overnight sensation with the VK Lingam tapes, says he has another video exposing case fixing within the judiciary.
Loh will be revealing to the media next week a video recording showing an alleged ongoing case fixing within the judiciary, but declined to divulge any details as yet.
“It is regretted that I cannot reveal anything due to legal reasons, but when releasing the video, I wish to inform the public of this likely violation of justice,” Loh told FMT.
He added that he has since met with representatives from the Bar Council, who have advised him on the legal matters regarding the video.
“When you do something like this [release a controversial video], there tends to be some people who will challenge you in court,” Loh said.
Asked if he was afraid of repercussions, Loh bravely replied: “There is nothing I am afraid of in the world.”
“They can challenge and threaten me, but nothing will hold me back,” he said.
“I am working for a better Malaysian society and environment,” he added.
Asked if he was responsible for recording the new video, Loh laughed: “I don’t always take videos-lah!”
“Otherwise other people will look at me as someone who always takes videos and avoid being around me.”
The 38-year-old Loh shot to fame in 2007 when a video that he shot led to a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the manipulation of judicial appointments.
The video earned him the parliamentary seat when he contested in the 2008 general election, defeating Barisan Nasional candidate Lee Hwa Beng and independent Billi Lim.
Loh’s low quality video was made public in September 2007 by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and showed lawyer VK Lingam allegedly talking to former Chief Judge of Malaya Ahmad Fairuz Abdul Halim about the appointment of the latter into the office of Chief Justice of the Federal Court.
Ahmad Fairuz retired as the Chief Justice of the Federal Court in late 2007 after his tenure was not renewed due to objection from the Conference of Rulers.

PAS to provide legal aid to HKL112 parents

Leven Woon | January 31, 2013
The party also questions police’s double standard as those who brought along their children to Najib’s rally on the same day have been let off scot-free.
PETALING JAYA: The 14 parents sought by police for bringing along their children to the KL112 rally on Jan 12 have been assured of legal assistance from PAS Youth today.
Its legal team director, Ahmad Zamri Asa’ad Khuzaimi, said the party viewed the police move as “a desperate attempt” and urged the parents to stay calm and contact PAS for assistance.
“We will offer legal help to the 14 parents sought by the police. If the matter goes to court, we will represent all of them,” he said.
Ahmad Zamri’s statement came in the wake of KL police chief Mahmod Salleh’s release of photographs of the 14 yesterday who brought their children to the opposition-led rally.
Mahmod said the act of bringing along children aged below 15 violated conditions under Section 4 (2) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and Section 31 (1A) of the Child Act 2001.
“We urge the parents to come forward to facilitate police investigations,” Ahmad Zamri told a press conference yesterday.
The day-long KL112 rally, despite drawing more than 100,000 people to the historic Stadium Merdeka on Jan 12, was an incident-free event.
It was widely seen as the opposition’s show of strength prior to the 13th general election.
What about those at Najib’s rally?
Ahmad Zamri also questioned the police targeting only KL112 participants while those who brought children to Prime Najib Tun Razak’s rally on the same day are being let off.
“Najib’s rally involved children as well. Why no action against them?” he asked in reference to the Himpunan Rakyat Bersama Najib rally outside a shopping centre in Semenyih.
He said although the Peaceful Assembly Act prohibits children from taking part in a rally, the spirit of law guarantees the right to peaceful assembly.
“What happened on Jan 12 is that more than 100,000 people gathered in a peaceful manner.
“It was like a carnival. Are you saying that children are forbidden to even attend a carnival?” asked Ahmad Zamri, adding that the party would argue the case from a technical aspect.
Meanwhile, Suaram, in a statement today condemned the police for wanting to take action against the parents.
“Investigating individuals who brought along children contravenes Article 15 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
“Article 20 of the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights guarantees the right to assemble peacefully.
“Article 10 of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia guarantees the freedom to assemble peacefully,” said Suaram coordinator R Thevarajan.

Malaysia is backsliding on rights - Human Rights Watch World Report 2013

Bangkok – Prime Minister Najib Razak’s promised reforms did not significantly improve legal protections for basic liberties in Malaysia, Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2013. Press restrictions, the use of excessive force against peaceful demonstrators, and intimidation of rights groups exposed the limits of government adherence to internationally recognized human rights.

In its 665-page report, Human Rights Watch assessed progress on human rights during the past year in more than 90 countries, including an analysis of the aftermath of the Arab Spring.

In Malaysia, Human Rights Watch said, government respect for basic rights and liberties is likely to be tested in the run-up to national parliamentary elections, which must be held no later than June 2013.

“The Malaysian government’s promised human rights agenda fell far short in practice in 2012,” said Phil Robertson, Asia deputy director at Human Rights Watch. “As elections approach, the government will need to demonstrate its willingness to uphold the rights of all citizens, whatever their political views.”

GE13 test
On April 28, 2012, tens of thousands of peaceful protesters were met by water cannon, teargas, beatings, and arrests during a march and sit-in led by Bersih, a coalition of civil rights organizations, to demand clean and fair elections. A government committee set up to investigate the incident has done little to shed light on the actions of the authorities on that day. Negotiations between the police and a coalition of opposition political parties and activist groups resulted in a peaceful gathering of the “People’s Uprising Rally” in Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on January 12, 2013.

Revisions to longstanding abusive laws had less of an impact on the ground than was hoped, Human Rights Watch said. The replacement of section 27 of the Police Act by the Peaceful Assembly Act did not rescind the absolute power of the police to grant permits for demonstrations. Instead the new law allows police to effectively outlaw marches by prohibiting “moving assemblies” by declaring innumerable sites off limits, and by giving the police the power to set time, date, and place conditions. The People’s Uprising Rally organizers agreed to 27 conditions – including on appropriate slogans – before their rally got approval, and the government is currently investigating compliance with three of the conditions.

Oppressive laws still exist
In another legal reform that fell short of international standards, the Malaysian government repealed the infamous Internal Security Act (ISA), and substituted the Security Offenses (Special Measures) 2012 Act (SOSMA). SOSMA reduced arbitrary detention to 28 days instead of the indeterminate period permitted under the ISA but added new infringements of rights. The law’s definition of a security defense is overbroad. Police, rather than judges, have the power to authorize communication intercepts, and prosecutors can utilize information as evidence without disclosing sources. Moreover, should a suspect be acquitted and the state appeal that decision, the acquitted suspect may be detained in prison or tethered to a monitoring device until the appeal is settled, a process that could take years.

Government harassment of human rights defenders continued in 2012, Human Rights Watch said. In response to spurious allegations by Jaringan Melayu Malaysia, an organization with close ties to Malaysia’s leaders, the government pursued a politically motivated investigation of Suaram, a leading Malaysian human rights organization in operation since 1989. At least six government agencies are seeking to find Suaram’s registration and operations illegal. Investigators have harassed staff and supporters, and threatened them with arrest while government politicians and government-controlled media outlets have publicly attacked the organization. On September 3, a week before investigations had begun, a government minister accused Suaram of keeping “highly suspicious” accounts and said that “99.4 percent” of its activities were “money collecting.”

LGBT
Groups supporting the rights of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender (LGBT) people fared even worse, Human Rights Watch said. In two speeches in 2012, Prime Minister Najib condoned discrimination by singling out the LGBT community as a threatening “deviant culture” that “would not have a place in the country.” Not only was the annual Seksualiti Merdeka (Sexual Diversity, in English) festival canceled in 2012 amidst ongoing intimidation of the LGBT community, but a court refused a judicial review of the police ban on the 2011 festival, a decision that festival organizers say leaves future festivals in legal limbo.
“The Malaysian authorities should respect the fundamental rights of non-discrimination and equality, and stop demonizing people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Boris Dittrich, advocacy director for the LGBT program at Human Rights Watch.

Media freedom
Reforms to freedom of the press also proved to be less than anticipated, Human Rights Watch said. The Printing Presses and Publications Act was amended, dropping the requirement for annual licensing of publications and ending the Home Affairs Minister’s power to award or rescind publishing licenses without court review. However, the revised law still requires that new publications obtain initial approval, and licenses still may be arbitrarily revoked.

The government appealed a 2011 Kuala Lumpur High Court ruling that a “license to publish is a right, not a privilege,” therefore requiring review of the government’s “improper and irrational” unwillingness to issue a license to the largest on-line newspaper, Malaysiakini, to publish a daily print edition.
An amendment to the Evidence Act provides that computer owners and operators of computer networks are publishers and thus responsible for the content displayed on their screens unless they could prove they had nothing to do with the content. This raises concerns about the presumption of innocence as well as free expression.

Malaysian police appear to routinely violate the rights of persons in custody, Human Rights Watch said. Police personnel have employed unnecessary or excessive force during demonstrations, while carrying out arrests, and in police lockups. Deaths in custody, routinely attributed to disease, go uninvestigated, suspects are beaten to coerce confessions, and criminal suspects die in suspicious circumstances during apprehension by police. Alleged police abuses go uninvestigated.

Malaysian immigration law still does not recognize refugees and asylum seekers, and prohibits them from working and their children from going to school. Unauthorized migrants face arrest and detention in unsanitary and overcrowded immigration detention centers, and caning for violating the immigration law. Anti-trafficking efforts conflate human trafficking with people smuggling, and punishes rather than protects trafficking victims by holding them in inadequate, locked shelters that resemble detention centers rather than care facilities. The government continues to do little to protect migrant domestic workers from beatings and sexual abuse by their employers.

“Numerous sectors of Malaysia’s economy depend on migrant workers, yet Malaysia continues to treat them as disposable people who can be used and abused,” said Robertson. “The government should fully respect migrant workers’ rights and stop re-victimizing those who have been trafficked to Malaysia.”

Indonesians, Filipinos and Pakistanis – had managed obtain ‘instant’ citizenships but Indians denied

A commotion erupted at the Penang National Registration Department (NRD) when police tried to prevent protestors holding red identity cards (IC) from entering the premises.
About 30 red IC holders and their families and several assemblypersons from Pakatan Rakyat earlier gathered at Larut Road this morning before marching to the NRD office in Anson Road.
NONEThe group, led by PKR vice-chief N Surendran, included senior citizens and children who had failed to obtain blue ICs from the NRD.
When they arrived at their destination, a commotion erupted when the police tried to prevent them from entering the building.
“This is unlawful and illegal,” said Surendran.
One protestor shouted “the police is sabotaging us!”
Latheefa Koya from the NGO Lawyers for Liberty said the police had threatened to arrest them.
They were accompanied by many supporters and Pakatan state reps like Sim Tze Tzin (Pantai Jerejak), Jason Ong (Kebun Bunga), and Ng Wei Aik (Komtar).
There were also several individuals with green ICs joining the rally.
Access eventually granted
After the Pakatan leaders had negotiated with the police, the group was allowed to enter the building.
They sat down at the lobby and waited for further action from the NRD.
Earlier, the 100 metre procession did not disrupt traffic flow as police and the state’s volunteer patrol unit managed traffic and guided the way.
NONEThey carried banners with the slogan ‘duduk’ and ‘bantah’ and chanted “hidup rakyat”.
Before the walk, Surendran (right) said the group wanted the NRD to process their applications immediately.
“They are ordinary citizens. Why are they denied their blue ICs?” he asked.
The event was prompted by the many complaints PKR state offices received from stateless people, including those with red ICs.
Also they were incensed at the revelations in the ongoing Royal Commission of Inquiry in Sabah on immigrants which revealed that foreigners – Indonesians, Filipinos and Pakistanis – had managed obtain ‘instant’ citizenships.
This is in stark contrast to many born and bred in Malaysia, and where their citizenship applications could take years to process.

55 tahun Umno BN abai kebajikan wanita – Haniza....!!!

A vengeful Dr M at it again

As expected, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is a vengeful man who will not hesitate to drag in others in defence of all the misdeeds committed during his 22-year reign of terror.

For the second time since he ‘stepped down’ nearly a decade ago, another nefarious act involving him is put to the tight scrutiny of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) after the Lingam tape scandal in 2007.
This time, Mahathir pointed his finger at the late Tunku Abdul Rahman and accused the latter of being ‘irresponsible’ by granting up to one million citizenships to non-Malays at independence. This, in his view apparently, amounts to a crime far more heinous than felony.

Suffice to say that the Tunku is no longer around to speak for himself. In questioning again the presence of the non-Malays in this country, Mahathir shows the world once again that his ‘valour’ has been completely misplaced.

Blind to history and thoroughly uninterested in intellectual pursuits, Mahathir has been exploiting political and historical issues in a manner that borders on fascism. Perhaps Marina Mahathir, who allegedly never shirks from ‘telling it straight’, can gently remind her senile father that Malaysia is no more a successor state to any of the Malay sultanates, than the People’s Republic of China is to all the dynasties prior to it.
When Sabah and Sarawak formed the Federation of Malaysia together with Malaya, a new chapter was inked, and a clean break should have been made with a past that was premised on feudalism.

But the conservative forces within Umno resisted real power-sharing and equal partnerships with the non-Malays, East Malaysians, and – I must emphasise – non-Umno Malays, and they found a chance to exert an ‘ideological monopoly’ by excluding all these elements from state policies. The phrase “Ketuanan Melayu” may have been coined by one Abdullah Ahmad, but it was Mahathir who gave flesh to the idea.
‘His familiar role of the devil’

Furthermore, what does the history of Sabah and Sarawak really have to do with the Malay peninsula except for the intervention of the British in the form of colonialism?

Personally, I have no problem with the government naturalising refugees from neighbouring countries. It is a humane act to do, and done properly, Malaysia could show itself to be upholding the spirits of humanity. What I am opposed to is to pick and choose whom among the refugee communities that the Mahathir administration sought to absorb as citizens.

In selecting only the Muslims from southern Philippines, Mahathir has practically given rise to massive discontent among the non-Muslims in Sabah, altered vastly the socio-political landscape of the state, and poisoned the ethnic relations there with lasting consequences.

If Mahathir earnestly wants to preserve the Malay/Islamic nature of Malaysia, he should, first and foremost, call for a referendum on the future of East Malaysians, many of whom have felt so bitterly betrayed that they may want to quit the federation altogether. Remember: Sabah was not a Muslim-majority state to begin with, and the people enjoyed far better ties than the Umno-dominated states.

Mahathir’s desperation to save his own skin – with the connivance of the local elites in the state – is single-handedly contributory to the present conundrum.

While it is important to study the history of the Malay peninsula, citing it to justify one’s wrongdoing of the present days is not only reckless, but shameless. If Mahathir truly wants to redress all the historical injustices, he should start by suing the British authorities for having brought his forefathers from India to work in the then British Malaya.

Throughout his political career, Mahathir has been so preoccupied with the issues of race and religion that he only ends up looking silly, sorry and stupid. Since ‘retirement’, he has reverted to the role of the devil that he is familiar with, resorting to race or religion wantonly just to cover up his own transgression.

Having a man like this – who knows not the meanings of honesty, decency and transparency – as our national leader is already shameful enough, but the most pathetic thing is the fact that many have voted for him in the past and may continue to worship him, which is the main reason why he will never feel ashamed.

Stand by for a dirtiest election ever held in Malaysia

Having done nothing whatsoever in four years as unelected prime minister, but lie through his teeth and squander public money hand over fist, Najib Abdul Razak still appears to believe that he’ll win the election he hasn’t yet had the gall to call.

And, let’s face it, there’s every chance that he will. Because the truth behind his fake ‘transformations’ of the nation and all the other wayang kulits he stages is that the electoral system remains as disastrously stacked in Umno/BN’s favour as ever.

If not more so, given that a ‘citizenship-for-votes’ scam just like the one in Sabah currently being ‘investigated’ by a royal commission of inquiry has also clearly been covertly operating in peninsular Malaysia.

And additionally, not one single demand by Bersih for clean and fair elections has been met. To be sure, the Election Commission has been playing for time by giving every appearance of action.

But the electoral rolls are still massively suspect, and electorates remain as massively gerrymandered as ever, varying in size as they do from as little as 5,000 voters to 150,000 or more, when in fact, they should be relatively equal.

And not only the Election Commission, but all the functionaries of the current Malaysian government – the defence forces, civil services, police, judiciary and ‘mainstream’ media – are in the pay of, or otherwise beholden to Umno/BN.
NONEAs can be witnessed by even a casual reading or viewing of the regime’s so-called ‘news’ media, if you’ve a strong enough stomach to survive the experience.

The latest, and by no means least nauseating example of this conspiracy of forces, was evident on the prime minister’s recent return from an allegedly ‘humanitarian’ side-trip to the Gaza Strip on the way home from last week’s World Economic Forum.
‘A show of sickening sycophancy’

Crowds of cheering ‘supporters’ (10,000 according to Bernama and 7,000 by Star Online) were gathered at KLIA – no doubt bussed-in at public expense – to cheer and wave banners bearing messages like “Welcome home the people’s champion“, “PM a national hero“, “We are proud of have (sic) a brave PM” and of course, the by now standard-issue “We love PM“.
In short, it was a show and a sandiwara of such sickening sycophancy as to put North Korea’s ridiculous dictatorship to shame.

And for what? To ‘celebrate’ the gigantic diplomatic boo-boo that Najib had, wittingly or otherwise, committed in visiting Gaza, which is controlled by hard-line Islamist Israel-haters Hamas, thus at one stroke both destroying his carefully-crafted moderate-Islam image and drawing the ire of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Abbas, whose peace-seeking Fatah party holds power on the West Bank and is recognised by the UN as the legitimate representative of Palestine, declared that he rejected and denounced Najib’s visit to Gaza on the grounds that “it enhances division and does not serve Palestinian interests.”

But such a stern public rebuff didn’t faze our hero, whose own 1Malaysia concept, after all, is a transparent front for activity that enhances division and does not serve Malaysian interests.

Never one to let reality spoil his party, however, Najib claimed to be “deeply touched” by the ‘unexpected welcome’, and said that it showed Malaysians’ “unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause”.
NONEHe took the decision to visit Gaza, he reportedly explained, “to see for himself the plight of the people living there, and also to convey the support of the people of Malaysia for their cause to be free.”

What a pity then, that despite his ‘heroic’ efforts to promote freedom for the Palestinians, Najib shows so little enthusiasm for freeing Malaysians from five decades of repression, blunder and plunder by the Umno/BN regime that he currently heads.

In fact, he’s hell-bent on getting his Umno/BN cronies and himself another term in power by hook, or more likely, by crook.
He and his accomplices are apparently confident too, or at least frantically pretending to be, that their dirty and ferociously unfair electoral system will deliver Malaysia into their clutches for yet another five years of thieving.

Bold, and yet wary
In fact, according to the ubiquitous Bernama ‘news’ agency, one Umno/BN mouthpiece, Department of Special Affairs (Jasa) director-general Fuad Hassan, has boldly predicted that BN is capable of not just victory, but of regaining the two-thirds majority it so bitterly resents having lost in the 2008 general election.
NONEBut Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Rahim Bakri (right) is seemingly not so over-optimistic, still seeing the need to warn potential Umno/BN voters to be wary of “certain quarters” who are trying to destroy the people’s trust in the existing government, as well as in the legislative, judicial and election systems.

“These quarters are making optimal use of the alternative media,” Bernama quoted him as continuing, “hence, making it difficult for any actions to be taken against them. Most of them are using cyber-based attacks from a foreign land, so they are free to attack the government.”

As a foreigner long-dedicated to making cyber-based attacks on the Umno/BN regime, I’d love to be able to convince myself that Bakri was referring to me personally.

However, his use of that quaint term “certain quarters” was a dead give-away for the fact that he was more likely referring to the usual targets of the regime’s paranoid conspiracy theories, the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Israeli’s Institute of Intelligence and Special Operations (Mossad), or even, for all I know, Martians.

But let’s not be lulled by the idiocy of Umno/BN utterances into a false and dangerous sense of security. However stupid they’re happy to sound for the benefit of their more bodoh supporters, they’re as cunning as the proverbial shithouse rats.

And despite all their bare-faced lies about having cleaned up their electoral activities and enabled expatriate Malaysians to vote, the coming general election looks set to be the dirtiest ever.

So that if they’re finally to be rid of Umno/BN, Malaysians will have to vote for the opposition in absolutely overwhelming numbers. As I’m sure they will if they’re even half as fed-up with this rotten, crooked, lying regime as us cyber-based foreigners are.

Housewife gunned down by cops, hubby seeks justice

A lorry driver has accused the police of firing mercilessly, and without cause, at a car in Klang, killing his wife and leaving his two children without a mother.

Foo Voon Kong, 26, said the Jan 18 incident took place about 7.45pm near Taman Sentosa, when his wife Pua Bee Chun, 22, was in the passenger seat of the car driven by a male friend.

Foo said shots were fired at the car, at the side where his wife had been sitting.

NONE“There were 25 bullets fired at the car and one hit my wife near her heart, killing her instantly,” Foo said.

“Somebody from the scene informed me that there was a shooting incident, and they believed it was my wife (that was shot at). I arrived there and saw police surrounding the vehicle and saw my wife, dead.

“As the incident took place near some houses, I inquired what happened and the house owners said police took the CCTV recordings from their premises and deleted what had happened,” he said.

Foo, who has a son and a daughter with Pua, is now seeking answers from the police as to why they fired at the car, killing his wife.
'No cause for police to shoot'

“She does not have any criminal record and there was no cause for the police to shoot. I also want to know from the male friend as to what happened, for he has escaped unhurt but is now missing,” said the lorry driver.

He claimed that there was no contraband or drugs in the car to justify the shooting.

Foo said this at a press conference organised by Klang MP Charles Santiago, with lawyer and Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo also present.
However, a report aired by television station ntv7 said Pua was shot in a car chase, with the car believed to have been reported stolen on Jan 15. It also said a parang and a packet of drugs were found in the car.

The report also said male driver of the car, aged 31, is said to have six previous criminal records involving robbery, drugs and abduction. He has been warded at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang.

IPCMC should be formed

Foo, who is desperately looking for answers to his wife's killing, said he now had to take care of the children.

“I do not know the man well, for we only knew him for a short period. However, that does not justify the police in firing that many shots to kill my wife, who is innocent,” Foo said.

Commenting on the incident, Charles said he was at the funeral and was shocked about the manner in which Pua died.

NONE“This yet again raises the question why the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) isn't formed to look into abuses by the police and enforcement authorities,” Charles said.

“There is no reason for the police to be trigger happy in killing an innocent woman.”

This, he added, was the third reported death caused by the police within this month, after the cases of C Sugumaran and Chang Chin Te.

Another widely reported police killing is that of 15-year-old Aminulrasyid Amzah after a car chase. A police corporal was charged and convicted of culpable homicide, but the shooter, Corporal Jenain Subi, was acquitted on appeal.

Gobind, who is acting for Pua's family, said erasing the CCTV recordings, as alleged by Foo, was an offence and he would be writing to the police on this matter.

“I feel important answers are needed as an innocent life has been lost and these children are now deprived of growing up without their mother,” Gobind added.
