Uthaya deprived of medicine and proper food, says fiancee

KLANG: Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) lawyer and ISA detainee P. Uthayakumar did not get proper diabetes medication and food and, as a result, his health began to deteriorate.

His fiancee S. Indradevi said yesterday that Uthayakumar’s diabetes level was at 18.8 and that his protein and uric acid levels were also dangerously high.

“This has made him listless, and when I saw him at the hospital on Monday he looked very weary and ill,” said Indradevi.

She said she had personally handed Uthayakumar’s medication to the Kamunting detention centre's administration but it appeared that it did not reach him.

Uthayakumar was rushed to the Taiping district hospital on Monday afternoon after he became ill.

“He told me that he had not been given any medication for his diabetes and the food served every day was not suitable for diabetics,” Indradevi said.

She added that Uthayakumar had also written to the detention centre’s administration six times since his detention asking for a proper diabetic diet and medication, among other things.

She also alleged that the camp authorities did not inform her that Uthayakumar had fallen ill and was admitted in hospital on Monday.

She said Uthayakumar’s lawyers had asked the camp administration to allow them to bring in a medical specialist to examine him.
