Why the police have been given too much power by politicians?

Our legal system was originally designed within our Constitution to uphold the human rights of our citizens. Today however, this system is warped. Most laws are misinterpreted, and are now misused for the convenience of politicians.

There are many variables involved in this major problem. Many of these dilemmas are due to corrupted politicians and police officers that lack the accountability needed for jobs of this stature. There are many problems with our justice system. Some of these problems include police procedures that are not properly followed, excess power that is used inappropriately, vague descriptions of laws (which are misused), and especially the incorrect notion of, “innocent until proven guilty.”

The original purpose of the Constitution has been diluted, and the ones who are meant to uphold the law have damaged our legal system. The original purpose of the constitution was to protect citizens from government oppression. It was written to form an organized and structured policy for the government to abide by. It was made so that future lawmakers could reference it in the years to come. However, it did not intend to allow unprofessional politicians and police officers to gain the power that they have today. Somebody’s life can now be impacted severely just because another person is having a bad day and chooses to abuse this authority.

For example, police can accuse you of whatever they feel like, and therefore can bring you to jail with no concrete reason at all. Many politicians, because of their lack of accountability, also misuse the power entrusted in them. When people in positions like these get upset it is easy to take it out on people by harassing and threatening them.

Almost without exception, actions like these are tolerated within the legal system. The sad thing about these examples is that instances such as these happen frequently.
No one with the power to change these actions really cares either. This problem is mainly because people who are treated unfairly have been in trouble before and are stereotyped. Most of these people will not speak up to be heard, and if they do, they are ignored or harassed. I think that even though these people have made mistakes, they should be treated impartially.

Personally, I feel that if politicians and police officers are given jobs that require a certain amount of responsibility, they should be garnering it with responsibility and integrity. The amount of integrity needed should be based on how much of an impact these people can make on others lives. This would weed out those who are just plain ignorant, and at the same time would instil better critical thinking skills for people that are just seeking power. Of course, this is not a solution, but it would be a crucial building block to restructure our legal system.

There are still instances that show politicians can corrupt our system too. Prosecutors sometimes play a much more aggressive role than needed and pursue outcomes that are obviously not fitting to the case involved.

After 50 years, it should be obvious that the system has failed and that it cannot be fixed even by the Supreme Court because the justice system has been distorted: the enhanced power of the prosecutor in sentencing has diminished the traditional role of the judge.

The result has been even less fairness, and as a result a huge rise in the prison population. The proper procedures that members of the police force are expected to follow have become more like suggestions instead of regulations.

The problem with an occurrence such as this is the fact that this person is now in a catch. If anyone tries to get the politicians in trouble, they will probably not have enough proof for a proper case. In addition, they would risk getting in trouble for what they did. It would be very likely for the politicians to lie and deny the whole fact.
