Islamic elements creeping into the Malaysian native laws: MP

Kota Kinabalu: Sepanggar MP Datuk Eric Majimbun urged those preparing the draft on the proposed Native Family Enactment to keep it free from religious elements.

He also wants them to seek the advice or opinions of all ethnic community/native leaders or elders, instead of just taking points from the present village chiefs who are relatively new and only just been appointed.

"There seems to be some kind of religious influence in the draft of the proposed enactment, like the word 'talak' which refers to Muslim divorce-related matters É natives do not have such a word nor ever use it as reference," said Eric, who was formerly Kota Kinabalu District Chief.

The SAPP Deputy President also claimed that native leaders or elders have not been given a chance to contribute their knowledge and views on the proposed enactment, considering the enactment is very important for native folk.

"I don't think they have sought any advice from all the native ethnic community leaders on the proposed enactment," he said, adding there was a recent talk held on the proposed drafting of the enactment where those who attended had noticed the presence of religious-related influence.

He hoped this will be taken seriously by those involved in preparing the draft because it concerns the interest of the native people in Sabah.
