KUALA TERENGGANU: Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has served notice of their intention to once again use the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu as ammunition for the Kuala Terengganu by-election campaign.
Less than 24 hours before nomination day, five PKR Youth Wing leaders were arrested this morning for putting up posters with pictures of the slain Mongolian woman in what is clearly an attempt to discredit Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The DPM has been trying to dodge links to the murder ever since his close associate Abdul Razak Baginda was arrested and charged for abetting the murder in 2006.
Abdul Razak, who had been keeping Altantuya as a mistress, was recently freed of the charge but two policemen remain on trial for the murder.
PKR Youth deputy chief Fariz Musa was arrested along with secretary Wan Aminuddin Ahmad and three others.
“What is the problem with putting up the posters of the late Altantuya?” PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Akin said in a statement.
“Is Najib Tun Razak disturbed by the posters since he is coming for the nomination in Kuala Terengganu?” asked Shamsul adding that the BN election director should not be worried if he was not involved in the murder.
Najib, who is heading the BN election team, arrives here today, and the posters of Altantuya would have served as a reminder of how the issue continues to dog him.
Since being named last October as Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi’s successor, Najib’s camp will see the by-election as crucial in establishing the return to winning ways of Umno and BN.
During the Permatang Pauh by-election last year, Najib had to swear at a mosque that he had never met Altantuya in an attempt to appease the Malay voters.
But that proved inadequate as Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahimn subsequently won that poll in a landslide.
