Well, PAS’ origin can be traced back to UMNO’s attempt to gain greater suport from Islamic leaders. As far back as 1950 when UMNO sponsored a national meeting of ulamas (religious teachers) in Johor.
At this meeting, the Ulama-ulama Sa-Malaysia (Pan-Malayan Union of Scholars) was formed, (read closely)…..AS A BODY WITHIN UMNO.
However, in 1951, it decided to become independent and Pan-Malaysan Islamic Party (known then as PMIP), meaning, today’s PAS was formed in Penang.
In 1963, renamed as Parti Islam Se-Malaysia.
So historically, Pas was in UMNO’s womb. See the divine fate. Now Pas going back to UMNO is not surprising.
Except the political mire. In 1959, Pas captured Kelantan and Kelantan and ruled until 1978.
In 1978, UMNO captured balik Kelantan and also Trengganu in 1962.
Pas joined BN in 1974 but got kicked in the butt in 1977, leaving much bad blood in relationship.
See, the trial of the history always interwined between UMNO and Pas. Like “lotus root broken up” but linked with strands of :”love” and hate.
So, whether Pas going back to “mother-ship,” I guess it normal BUT this time UMNO has an added agenda : TO BREAK UP the Pakatan coalition.
Just a tactic, long shot. UMNO may well succeed to get a part of Pas back into its fold, at least to weaken Pas’ coalition with Anwar’s Keadilan.
