KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 – Pakatan Rakyat today reiterated their call to the government not to renew Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan’s contract but said they did not want their demand to be turned into a racial issue.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who chaired a parliamentary round-table entitled “New Inspector-General of Police for a Safe Malaysia” this morning said the demand should not be seen as questioning Malay leadership.
“This is not about challenging the Malay leadership, this is about justice and human rights ... defending a Malay leader with questionable records is an insult to the Malays,” he said.
Of late, the federal opposition has been accused by Umno-owned Malays newspapers of undermining Malay institutions when they criticised the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for questioning DAP’s Teoh Beng Hock who was later found dead outside the Selangor MACC headquarters.
Anwar’s remark received the support of other PR leaders who spoke at the forum.
“The question of a Malay being stripped off his position should not arise,” said Perak DAP chief Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham.
PAS vice-president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also shared the same view.
“As a Malay I feel insulted if someone of questionable moral character is retained as a leader,” said Tuan Ibrahim.
“The issue that we are discussing today is not a racial issue, it is about the future of our country, it is about crime prevention,” he added.
PR leaders also called on Musa not to apply for an extension because of his failure in reducing crime.
Musa reached his retirement age in 2007, but has continued to serve for another two years with his extension scheduled to expire this September.
It is understood that the Police Commission has recommended another extension for him.
