Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will meet representatives of Kampung Buah Pala Residents Association on Thursday, to discuss the plight of residents at Kampung Buah Pala. He said association chairman M. Sugumaran had agreed to a heart-to-heart talk with the state government, together with representatives of the kampung residents.
He said they would discuss the matter at his office at 8pm."Every resident will send representatives to discuss the matter on Thursday," Lim told reporters Monday. Kampung Buah Pala residents have been fighting in recent years, to save their cattle-rearing village, dubbed Penang’s ‘High Chaparral’, from demolition to make way for development projects.
In another development, the Penang government has lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission over the 50% discount on the land premium for the lease of Kampung Buah Pala land in 2007. The report was lodged against the previous Barisan Nasional administration, Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy said today.
The impending demolition of Kampung Buah Pala, regarded by some as a cultural icon, has become the biggest headache facing the current Pakatan Rakyat administration. On July 9, the state government declassified confidential state executive council (exco) minutes of the previous Barisan Nasional administration pertaining to the alienation of Kampung Buah Pala land to a co-operative.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said earlier that the records showed that the state government land was approved to Koperasi Pegawai Kerajaan Pulau Pinang twice on Aug 18, 2004 and June 8, 2005. “The premium of RM6.42mil or RM20 per sq ft was subsequently reduced to RM3.21mil or RM10 per sq ft.
