Perkasa wants ISA detention for questioning Islam, Malays and BM
PUTRAJAYA: The right-wing Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) wants the Internal Security Act (ISA) to be used to detain anyone who questions or debates the role of Islam, the status of the Malay rulers, special position of Bumiputeras and Bahasa Malaysia as the national language.
Perkasa submitted a memorandum today to the Home Ministry, urging the relevant amendments to the law.
A seven-member delegation led by the organisation’s president Datuk Ibrahim Ali met Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein at his office this morning.
The Pasir Mas MP also wants the government to establish an Internal Security Council that would grant approval before the Home Minister could make any detention order on any person.
He said such a panel should be chaired by the Attorney-General and the members should include the Inspector-General of Police, two senators to be nominated by the Senate and a member of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam)
“So now the minister will not be blamed that he is abusing the power because of political interests, pressure or personal vendetta,” Ibrahim said.
The Home Minister commended Perkasa for their willingness to meet the Ministry.
“The government has announced that it will review and amend this act. So (we welcome) proposals which are realistic that come from those who really want to bring change and not for temporary popularity or have political mileage and bring problem to many people.
"I hope our meeting will be sign that the Home Ministry is willing to meet with anybody in this manner because what we want to determine is the future of our country and the people,” Hishammuddin said.
He also confirmed that the ISA would be amended at the next sitting of Parliament.
