WE ARE thankful to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Idris Jala for his honesty in telling us that Malaysia could become bankrupt within nine years if subsidies are not slashed.
In a way, he is telling us that the government is having financial problems.
Why is it that every time the country faces an economic or financial crisis, the rakyat will be the first to be asked to make sacrifices to save the government?
We never get to hear from our leaders that they will tighten their belts first, like giving up their luxurious lifestyle, take a big pay cut and cut back on their globetrotting unless necessary.
The PM and his wife's recent visit to the United States is a case of lavish spending.
Millions of ringgit were spent for the event and the opportunity for the PM to meet with US President Barack Obama. More money also went into advertising the arrival of his wife in Washington.
Getting celebrities to grace unnecessary functions serves to massage the ego but are otherwise wasteful expenses.
Why did Idris not ask his boss and other political leaders to set a good example by being more prudent in using public funds?

If you wait for media publicity on a Visiting Head of Government of Malaysia or other countries that are of no politicl interest to the US you will only get a 3cm long one column mention in the New York Times or the Washington Post. The only way to make your visit known is through an advertisement. Do you know how much one full page costs in those two newspapers.?
