Who wants to join UMNO if not for power & corruption?

Umno veteran Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang said party members must unite and avoid factionalism and turning the party into a conduit to enrich themselves.

“As a sacred party, Umno must continue to unite the Malays as well as other races,” he said when asked about his expectations in conjunction Umno 64th anniversary.

Abu Zahar, who is also the Dewan Negara president, said the people were now starting to feel the changes made in Umno, including the amendments to its constitution to make it more open and interesting to the younger generation.

The amendments to the constitution, which included changing the nomination quota system, would make Umno elections more democratic and eliminate political corruption.

He said Umno members should emulate party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak who was hard working, friendly and sincere in championing the people’s interest.

Abu Zahar, who was a former Kuala Pilah Umno division chief, said Umno members must win the hearts of voters, especially the youths as more young voters would be eligible to vote in the 13th general election.

“They must follow the political development not only through the print media, which is no longer dominant, but also the blogs,” he added.

Another Umno veteran, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Tapa, said the party still enjoyed the trust and confidence of the people as the party was still powerful, and its leaders were sincere in championing the Malay agenda while not denying the rights of other races.

During 64 years helming the government, many Umno leaders left indelible marks in their sacrifice, deeds and dedication to the growth of the country, he said in a statement posted on the Umno website.

He also urged Umno leaders and members to curtail money politics especially during party elections.

“Loyalty to individuals is often linked to money politics. Those who are wealthy can become leaders. This is dangerous as it can damage the credibility of the leaders and the party,” he said, adding that Umno members should defend the social contract.
