UiTM VC issued Ibrahim Ali Award notice on June 9

UiTM vice-chancellor Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar sent out an official notice on the controversial Ibrahim Ali Award on June 9 this year, despite purporting the matter had yet to be approved by the university senate.

A copy of the notice - entitled Ibrahim Ali Leadership Award in conjunction with UiTM Convocation and signed by Sahol - was obtained by Malaysiakini .

It was sent to all UiTM campuses, departments and faculties nationwide.

"This is to inform that Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali has offered to sponsor RM5,000 annually to students in recognition of their commitment and contribution towards the upliftment of their race.

"He has suggested that this award be given at every convocation, unless there is no candidate who qualifies for the award (that year)," read the notice.

Attached to the notice were guidelines on the Ibrahim Ali Award and nomination forms.

Recipients of the notice were asked to disseminate the information to students, and submit the completed nomination forms to UiTM's Institut Pemikiran dan Kepimpinan Melayu (Impak) before July 1.

In an immediate response to the disclosure of the notice, Sahol told Malaysiakini that the notice was merely a survey to gauge the response of lecturers to the award.

The notice was also aimed at determining whether there would be any nominations for the award, Sahol said further.

His remarks come on the heels of assertions made yesterday that the controversial Ibrahim Ali award has not yet been approved by the university authority.

"However, it was overlooked because there was a department that publicised it through Internet," said the UiTM vice-chancellor in a short message on his Facebook page.

He said that the award was suggested by Ibrahim himself, still pending approval from the university senate and board of directors.

"UiTM did not choose the name or make any suggestion on the award. The suggestion came from Ibrahim Ali himself. I just requested it to be referred to the senate for decision.

"If it is agreed (by the senate), only then will it be brought to the board of directors for endorsement."

Sahol said further that the process will take a long time as there are 60 professors, deans and campus rectors in the board.

"Every one of them acts as an individual. They cannot be lobbied. It is a strong and independent body in UiTM," he said.

"UiTM is concerned about the current situation and will not accept the award without any approval from the senate and board of directors. With this explanation, I hope the issue will not be raised again," Sahol added.
