SAPP moots special ICs for Sabahans

A new identity card system will be implemented for Sabahans should the Sabah Progressive Party come into power in the next general election, the party has pledged.

The system will differentiate the legitimate citizens of Sabah from the illegal immigrants who hold Putrajaya-issued identity cards, SAPP president Yong Teck Lee said.

The proposed "Sabah Identity Card" system will also be used for all official purposes.

"The authority (of the state government) to issue identity cards has been proven. In the past, identity cards indicate the place of issuance - which is Kota Kinabalu," Yong said at a ceramah in Kepayan on Friday.

Yong, a former chief minister of Sabah, added that SAPP's promise was in line with the 20-point Malaysia Agreement of 1963.

It is understood that the new Sabah IC proposal is one of SAPP's responses to Pakatan Rakyat's promise to restore Sabah's autonomy.

SAPP is not an official Pakatan component but it has an unofficial working relationship with the coalition from the peninsula.

Among the other speakers at the ceramah were former state finance minister Mohd Noor Mansur, SAPP deputy president Amde Sidik, Likas assemblyperson Liew Teck Chan and Sepanggar MP Eric Majimbun.
