They came in droves for the dinner bash last night and the crowd of about 1,500 made up mostly of fishermen were definitely hooked.
The bait was simply irresistible. Nope. It was not the delectable spread of steam fish and herbal chicken but rather three scantily clad women.
Donning BN-blue tank-tops, hot pants with 'fishnet' stockings and boots, the girls sizzled the inhabitants of the Kampung Baru Sepatang fishing village with several hot Chinese numbers, including one that was aptly titled 'shake, shake, shake'.
The dinner was organised by Barisan Nasional in an attempt to lure votes for the upcoming Bukit Gantang parliamentary by-election, where Chinese support is crucial.
Among the top leaders enjoying the show was Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the newly-elected Umno vice-president and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in-charge of Islamic affairs.
Also present at the 'Chinese Unity' dinner were Gerakan deputy president Chang Ko Youn and BN candidate Ismail Saffian.
While most of the guests were visibly more pre-occupied with the food, a group of hardcore BN supporters applauded whenever the BN leaders took the stage.
However, the temperature increased a notch when the girls came on stage to perform before and after the BN luminaries made their speeches.
All three BN figures delivered speeches, with Ismail speaking for no more than five minutes.
Ahmad Zahid made an attempt to woo the mostly Chinese audience by borrowing opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's famous statement, "We are one family" garnering some applause from the crowd.
Meanwhile, Chang hit out at claims by Pakatan Rakyat that the by-election served as a referendum for the power transition in Perak.
He urged voters to set aside whatever grievances they have until the next general election, and instead give Ismail a chance in this by-election.
Zahid: Hot acts 'part of Chinese culture'
Food and hot women are not something new in BN by-election campaigns.
At last year's Permatang Pauh battle, MCA organised a series of free dinners across towns which featured lucky draws and scintillating dance performances by beautiful girls.
It was also reported that PPP had held a similar dinner on Tuesday for 50 tables, which included even sexier singers.
When pressed on whether such performances would translate into votes for BN, Ahmad Zahid said that they were a "part of the Chinese culture."
"In my constituency, we did not win by holding such performances. However, we also respect Chinese customs. In fact, we should respect the customs of all races.
"For example, only 20 percent of the voters in my constituency are Chinese. However, I still visit Chinese temples and attend Chinese funerals," he said, referring to his Bagan Datoh constituency, also in Perak.
He also argued that as both the state and federal governments have been working hard to resolve the problems of the Chinese community, he is anticipating increased support from them for BN.
Wan Azizah stars in Pakatan's show
On the other hand, Pakatan has been keeping its streak of nightly political ceramahs that are being graced by more and more prominent leaders.
In one of the ceramahs held at Taiping last night, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail made a special appearance to appeal to Chinese and Indian voters.
At the dinner, an Indian woman and her daughter walked up the stage to present Wan Azizah with a bouquet of flowers.
During the ceramah, Wan Azizah lambasted the police for banning political parties from bringing up the issue of murdered Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.
"I would like to question the police why we're not allowed to mention Altantuya at all. Even a prominent French paper has run a report on her murder.
"Our (incoming) prime minister has been associated with a crime, and it is not just any crime, but a murder case. We need to know why.
"Even when we travel to foreign countries and tell foreigners that we’re Malaysians, foreigners tell us that there's something wrong with our (incoming) prime minister."
The ceramah was also attended by Pakatan candidate Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin, who made a short speech before rushing off to another ceramah.
The other guests include PKR deputy president Dr Lee Boon Chye, Perak assembly speaker V Sivakumar and Rawang state assemblyperson Gan Pei Nee.
