Success of democracy simply means the people get what they need and deserve socially, politically and economically. First of all, the participation of people in political and electoral events is essential, but both have to be done rationally. This is why righteous in heart and thinking is important among people in democratic nation.
As a citizen, we own the nation and we have rights over the development of the nation. As a responsibility to bring up the nation, we choose the right candidate to run the show, in the name of election. After the successful candidate occupies the seat, we should always follow up with his activities (not personal ones ).
Monitor his motions and make a checklist whether that person is fulfilling what he supposed to. If not, question him, that’s our right.
After a particular term, evaluate his performance. Compare it with how we wanted it to be.
If it is far from what we expect, vote him out in the next election. This reminds me of a common phrase “leaders are not born, they are made”. Who made them? We!
The biggest mistake done by people is by choosing the wrong candidate. Some are unaware of it, but some are not. Let’s talk about those whose unaware of this situation. Ask yourself a question. Why did I vote for him? I’m sure that some might not have an answer.
It happens due to lack of evaluation on the candidates. Evaluation based on his policy, his party’s policy, the rational ideas proposed, and track record is very important. What most of our people see is the sweetness in his speech during campaigns.
As we all know, politicians are good in talking in a way you will melt. To be added here some are also being bribed for votes. Remember the RM50 you get today might become the barrier for your development in future.
Let us talk about the people who votes for the wrong candidates although they are aware. These are those who living in a democratic country with the mentality of a North Korean. Simple, loyalty to a person should only exist in dictatorship. In a democracy we should be loyal to the policies which ensure the development of the nation.
We can actually witness cases like politicians who often provoke racial sentiments, do something good for the people when election is around the corner or make a stand not for the nation but to secure his political position, but in the end still gets the people’s support.
Why? Because there are people who say “no matter what he does, he is still my leader” or in another word worshiping a politician.
This is what I call the mentality of a North Korean. On the other hand, some of these people will complain if there are somethings affecting them. What do we actually call this? Hypocrisy? Get rid of this mentality and start thinking rationally!
