Critics Of Security Equipment Purchase Taken To Task

KUALA PILAH, May 13 (Bernama) -- Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Hasan Malek on Tuesday hit out at certain quarters which ridiculed the purchase of security and defence equipment.

He said they questioned the purchases made for security purposes as they felt that the country was not under threat.

"We do not have to reveal any information to the public because this is a matter of security. There are reasons why we should not disclose the information," he told Bernama.

For instance, he said, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) needed to use frigates as its offshore patrol vessels in meeting current demands.

"Anyway, MMEA has been using only refurbished patrol vessels acquired from other security forces, among them vessels which were more than 50 years old," he said.
