More than 50% of public universities lecturers are "Cari Makan" survival cases and not worth to be an academicians. How Pathetic?

UM needs at least RM200m to match top varsities

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Ghauth Jasmon believes that local universities need to spend a minimum of RM200 million in research to be among the top universities in the world.

He pointed out that money spent by top universities in the world is incomparable to the funds made available to local institutions.

“What I know is that the top 20 universities of the world have an operating budget of RM2 billion. If you look at that it means that to get into that league, we need lots of money,” he said in an interview with The Malaysian Insider yesterday at his office.

Ghauth explained that funds provided under the current research grant scheme are insufficient.

“Under the current research university grant, it is still not enough. I know that there is a lot of good research but they cannot take off because there are insufficient funds.

"With the additional funds, I am sure that we will be able to get in the next 2 or 3 years,” he said.

He added that UM needs RM200 million to break into the ranks of the world's top 100 universities.

“We get about RM100 million a year. Double that figure, it can take us quickly into the top 100.

"Because if you look at the top universities in the world, MIT spends US$600 million a year on research. So the top universities in the world actually put a lot of money into their research,” he said.

Times Higher Education magazine today published its latest rankings of the top 200 universities in the world. UM was ranked 180th in the Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings after coming in at 230th last year.

Ghauth stressed the importance of investing in research for local universities to get in the top 20 league.

“Definitely, if not then we are dreaming. That is the truth,” he said.

The former Multimedia University (MMU) president replaced Datuk Rafiah Salim as the vice-chancellor at the end of last year.

mi1: Name one Malaysian public university with an outstanding achievement. There are so many private university lecturers who are worth 100 times better than public university lecturers, in terms of knowledge and skill. You chose the wrong guy and you pay the price and finally Malaysian’ s half past six (incapable) academicians who like to plagiarize being retained as professors and senior lecturers.
