SHAH ALAM: Anwar Ibrahim has been appointed economic adviser to the Selangor state government.
The move, announced by Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, is expected to consolidate the state government’s efforts in implementing policies that directly benefit people across the board.
In making the announcement, Khalid said that Anwar, the former Finance Minister, was well-versed and internationally noted for advocating “humane economics”.
During Anwar’s tenure as Finance Minister, the country registered strong economic growth marked by surplus budgets. His policies resulted in buoyant development and affordable lifestyles with easy credit facilities for small businesses, and stability in consumer prices.
Asia Money named him Finance Minister of the Year in 1996 and Newsweek International lauded him as Asian of the Year in 1998.
According to Khalid, Anwar’s appointment is to harness the expertise from within Pakatan Rakyat to “boost its standing as pacesetter among Malaysian states where economic development is concerned.”
Similarly, Anwar’s strong anti-corruption stance is seen as timely in view of the crucial need for financial accountability and transparency following recent scandals such as the Port Klang Free Zone debacle and the recent Auditor General’s report on rampant misspending throughout the country.
