New Economic Policy - Initially is it a very good idea and a noble one. It is to help poor malay people.Meaning it is for malays , any malays irrespective of religion.
Helps in terms of education,work,housing,loans,trust funds,scholarship,government contacts,subsidies,proton dealership,petronas dealership,business , quotas etc etc.
you name it , they got it type of "helps" or "handicaps".So , in a way it looks good and the malays really needed a starting point or somwhere to begins with. And as in all things, there is an EXPIRY date too.
But, it never expires!
However later on as the years went by ,the policy mutated and was up for abuses and mischievous. Firstly it mutated to " malay muslim".Meaning if a malay is a non islam, he/she will not entitles to those benefits. Thus cannot be of "bumiputera" status.
Later on , it further mutated to "umno bumiputera " status. Meaning , "umno bumiputeras" have more benefits than a regular "bumiputera".
Below are some known facts on where it went wrong. Good example will be - housing costing over 500000 !Scholarship/sponsorship and special loans to umno supporters.Top management in GLCs to within top umno echelons. Top civil service positions to known umno supporters. And Mahathir always mentions the " AP" problem.
It is harmful to malaysia economy and democracy at large, as it creates a lack of uncompetitiveness at any level. As well as it creates racial tensions among the multi tier ethics group of malaysian. It also creates racial profiling , religious stand off ,their religion is more holier and mightier than your religion and my religion combines type of stuffs.
Therefore groupings like Hindraf / Bersih / Anti ISA is here. It is not that they have nothing else to do , but they were forced to do so. As i am sure that all people will be busy with work , family , career , health. But it is very natural that today we have such groupings and gathering more voices. Because of years of corruptions, injustices ,neglects, abuses , nepotism, cronism , racism ...all because of NEP .
Sad to see the actual result after 50 years of independence , right? And can you imagine once petronas oil is long gone and dries up plus we have the majority still using the "tongkat" and still fighting for more NEP?
