The share of Malaysian Indians in universities should be 8 percent but it has never crossed 6.1 percent, community leader and and former minister S. Samy Vellu has said.
Vellu, who also heads the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), pointed out that in 2002 only 2.3 percent of seats in universities were allocated to the Indian community.
Since then the number has varied: 5.2 percent in 2003, 5.9 percent in 2004, 5.6 percent in 2005 and 6.1 percent in 2006.
But he said the number of Indian students who got outstanding results in their examinations had risen over the years. Velu spoke to the media after meeting Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin Tuesday.
Meanwhile, another Indian origin leader has demanded that at least 40 percent of jobs in the civil service should be set aside for the Indian as well as Chinese minorities over the next five years.
The demand was made by A. Sivanesan, the Sungkai Siput state's executive councillor (minister) for health, environmental and family development.
