This election also mark another phenomenon. The youths are more readily dispensing their thoughts on what they think of the government. It could be factually true that the elections in the 5 states won by the Barisan Rakyat could be due to the fervent voting of the youths for them. Youths are more ready than ever to participate and to talk about political situation in Malaysia. My generation was one of the in between generations where talk of politics take a background role.
We were brainwashed from young that there is no point voting against the government because the oppositions then were a bunch of extremist. Those thoughts were embedded deep within our grey matters. We were thought that there was a 13th May 1969 incidents though on further probings the adults would hush hush and moved to a silent mode. We were taught that politic is just a dirty game.
Fact was, there were many older generations, maybe one or two generations above me who upon the knowledge of the 12th election went into a frenzy mode and decidedly that there will be riot. They asked for the doors to be bolted and locked so that everyone will remain in the house until the “disturbance” is over. But little did they know that the election wasn’t a racially motivated one. They knew the chinese and indians were not happy but what they did not know was that the chinese and indians weren’t angry with the malay but with the government. Fact was the malays were not that happy with the government either which explains the results of how “developed” and “rich” states also fell into Barisan Rakyat’s hands.
Youths speaking out is a healthy development. It is a healthy development by any measure for any country. They will ultimately be our leaders of tomorrow. But this has to be taken with many pinches of salts. They should be aware that any extreme measures would have a reverse effects. Like the youths of Indonesias who would at the drop of a pin demonstrate against anything. Most if you were to interview them knew that there are some problems without really exploring the issues and were made to be standing pins. It is only hope that our youths will follow reasonable precaution and measures when discussing politics. Do not take rumours as it is without further probing. Do not be influenced by others. Let you, yourself make up your own mind.
With that, I hope it will be a better Malaysia in future.
