Kuala Lumpur, May 24 : Malaysian Indian Congress president and former Cabinet Minister S.Sami Vellu has expressed concern over the Indian community in Malaysia not supporting his party like before.
Suggesting that both internal and external issues had led most Malay Indians away from the party, the New Strait Times quoted Vellu as saying: We are accused of not doing anything and there have been wild rumours going on about it."
Addressing the MIC's annual convention at the Dewan Warisan, Vellu said many Indians held differing views from those of party leaders.
"MIC has always been a trusted friend of the community. We are a dynamic party which continues to have close co-operation with the government. However, the people's perception is different from ours," he cautioned.
He said setbacks had prompted MIC to re-brand itself.
The party would ensure that 50 per cent of its membership were youths. He urged members to rally behind the party's rebranding efforts.
