Students to stage 16-hour new year demo at UPSI

t will be a new year’s celebration with a difference at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) as students plan to mount a 16-hour demonstration in solidarity with undergraduate Adam Adli Abdul Halim.

According to student NGO, Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia chairperson Ahmad Syukri Abdul Razab, the students will be camping out there from 9pm on new year’s eve until 1pm on Jan 1.

“We will call the night ‘Funeral for UUCA’ (Universities and University Colleges Act) and we’ll hold a sit-in to symbolise this.

“There will also be speeches from student leaders, including Adam himself,” he added of the UPSI student leader.

NONEContacted by Malaysiakini, Ahmad Syukri (left) said UPSI students also plan to place wreaths in front of the university’s main gate.

The protest follows a show cause letter served to Adam by the UPSI disciplinary board. He faces charges of tarnishing the university’s name and disrupting public order.

Adam has received flak and threats to his safety for lowering a flag bearing the image of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during a demonstration in favour of academic freedom.

Meanwhile, student NGO Kumpulan Aktivis Mahasiswa Independen said in a statement that Upsi has “no right to stop Adam” from exercising his civil liberties.

“We don’t know what threat (to public safety) they are referring to. We know the charges are baseless, unconstitutional, invalid and irrational,” it said.

It added that Article 10 of the federal constitution guarantees freedom of expression, and that the constitution is the highest law of the nation.

Separately, the group also claims to have spotted brochures distributed around the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) campus, depicting the act of sodomy between two men.

Kami claims that the brochures were distributed on Thursday, a day after another set of brochures claiming that the NGO’s deputy president Khalid Ismath is a “Shiite agent” was distributed.

When contacted, the NGO said that several law students have lodged complaints with the university authorities on Friday.
