KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 — PAS vice president Datuk Mahfuz Omar slammed the police today for their inconsistencies following the arrest of a 19-year-old who “confessed” to an arson attack on a church in a Facebook posting two days ago.
The student later confessed that his admission was a hoax and this, claimed Mahfuz, showed the hypocrisy of the police.
“When I asked why the police had not arrested the suspect of an arson attack on a church when they already have ‘identified’ the person, they replied that they needed to be careful and get all the information they could before making the arrest.
“But when this youth confessed on his Facebook that he was responsible for another attempted attack, the police did not hesitate to arrest him without having the need to gather any information,” said Mahfuz in a statement today.
Mahfuz claimed this indicated a serious lapse on the part of the police and had further eroded their credibility.
“First they say they have to probe thoroughly before arresting, the next, they just arrest without any thorough probe,” lambasted the PAS leader.
“If a university student can fool the police, Umno can easily exploit the police to serve their narrow political agenda,” said Mahfuz.
Yesterday, Deputy Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar revealed that police now have a lead on the “physical attributes” of the suspects in last Friday’s firebombing attack on the Metro Tabernacle Church in Taman Desa Melawati here.
The Metro Tabernacle Church was the most badly damaged and the first to be hit by a spate of firebombing and arson attacks against Christian churches following the recent uproar over the “Allah” issue.
The first floor of the church was completely gutted by the ensuing fire.
