Scholarship row: HRP files report against Najib & Co

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Rights Party (HRP) today filed a police report against Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin and Higher Education Minister Khaled Nordin.

HRP information chief S Jayathas told reporters that Najib's government was allegedly abusing the right of top scoring Indian students to obtain scholarships, loans and university seats.

He cited the Federal Constitution which states that all are equal before the law. “But here the laws are overturned by Najib and his team,” he added.

Jayathas, who filed the report with the Brickfields police, said an estimated 2,000 Indian students who scored at least 7As in the SPM examination were not given scholarships.

“This is very unfair and we want the police to investigate Najib, Muyhiddin and Khaled for violating the constitution,” he added.

In his report, Jayathas also mentioned the de-recognition of medical degrees from Russia, Ukraine, India and Indonesia, where there are a large number of Malaysian Indians students.

He claimed that it was deliberately done with the intention of reducing the number of Malaysian Indian doctors.

Meanwhile, Jayathas said HRP was unhappy with the lack of response from the Prime Minister's Office on the memorandum sent by the party regarding the scholarship issue.

"We gave them one week to meet the Indian community to address the scholarship issue. But until now, there has not been a single phone call,” he added.

The four-point memorandum, sent on June 15, called for an increase in the Public Service Department’s overall budget allocation for scholarships.

The memorandum also called for the abolishment of the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) exam and the introduction of a pre-university exam instead for all races
