'Mismah-gate': Nazri to meet PM over emergency sitting
Bernard Phillips: Umno officials may be behind this crime but they can do nothing without the cooperation of the civil service. Therein lies the biggest evil permeating the country.
Umno and these government officials must know that these offences are among the worse they can commit - offering citizenships to people who are not eligible, and even worse, possible criminals from their own country. They may even be Christians.
It should be the PM demanding that this matter be debated in Parliament and investigated throughly. Anything less will only convince Malaysians that the Umno/BN government is prepared yet again to do anything to continue to remain in power.
Anonymous_4182: Emergency parliament sitting aside, shouldn't the PM be making a statement on this very serious issue. This is a national issue which involve the security of the nation with a group of treacherous people in government department allowing foreigners to be classified as citizens with voting rights.
All the millions spent on defence via fighter planes, warships, weapons, keeping an army, police to protect our nation go down the drain if what is said is true. Soon Indonesians will be sitting inside our Parliament fighting for their very interest, not for Malaysia. It is no more enemy at the gate, it is Trojan horses in Malaysia.
And who is responsible? Treacherous Malaysians.
Disgusted: I don't think anything will come out of this. It's all a hogwash that Minister in the PM's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz will raise this with PM Najib Razak.
These are delaying tactics by Nazri and Umno until sudden declaration of election date by Najib catching all opposition off guard. By then, it is too late to check all electoral rolls for phantoms and illegals.
Bersih's demands will be sidelined once elections are announced. The only thing the opposition and right-minded rakyat can do is to boycott the elections until all these issues are resolved.
I won't be surprised BN is declared winners by EC by default if that happens. Then we will have to do what Egypt and Tunisia did to get rid of BN and their corrupt leaders.
Hello: Pakatan Rakyat parliamentarians and parties must not let this issue rest even if the Umno-BN government obfuscate, deny and dilly dally over investigating the issue.
Parties of both divide must investigate all the way from bottom up to the highest level in EC (Election Commission) and NRD (National Registration Department) and bring the culprits to book for treason.
Don't let it become like in Sabah in which the state population increased three-fold in 10 years and nothing was done to this day.
Changeagent: Those who live by the sword will die by the sword. When criticising Pakatan leaders for jumping straight into a request for an emergency parliamentary sitting, Nazri should take a good hard look at himself for also jumping into conclusion that they hadn't done their due diligence, and then insinuating that 'Mismah is actually a citizen and can vote'.
As a senior minister, he too has a dutiful responsibility to investigate the truth of the matter before shooting straight from his hip.
Ruben: I don't think we are jumping the gun over the issue. First and foremost, the EC gave the electoral rolls CD to Pakatan parties one day before the end of the protest period. That is totally unfair, yet the parties found in that very short time so many irregularities that cannot be explained as a technical glitch.
This has been happening for too long a time, but in those days the opposition had only a small presence and the rakyat were not as informed as now. That is why we need a two-party system.
We are in dire need of checks and balances. There has been too much of vote/registration riddling, corruption and blatant abuse of power. The rakyat has also woken up and spoken through Bersih 2.0.
Ben Hor: Something tells me that Nazri meeting with the PM is not really to discuss why and how an error like this could have happen. They would probably be discussing on how to contain the situation and what approach to take to defend against Pakatan's attacks.
Ambiga: EC can change if put under pressure
Sarajun Hoda: Let's not forget that the Election Commission (EC) chairpersons are appointed by the BN government from out of the most obedient servants. So, if we want the engagement with EC to be effective, we must first get it empowered.
Saying it has power is not enough. They must be truly independent, not tail-wagging slaves. Bersih's first effort should instead be 'breaking EC away from executive control'. Otherwise, even if BN loses power the next government in place will do the same and use EC to the fullest.
YellowBoxer: BN doesn't want to gain support from the voters. They just need the support of the EC to manipulate the elections in order to win by hook or by crook. A hook is always crooked, never straight, and a crook is even more crooked. Both are crooked ways of winning.
BN is only interested in perpetuating their misrule and are power crazy, an accusation they often use against Anwar Ibrahim. Anyway, I salute you, Ambiga Sreenevasan, for still having hopes in the tainted EC. You really have a positive stance towards your adversaries.
Anonymous_3e4b: What hope? There is no hope. If there is, changes would have happened long ago. Like blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin once said, Pakatan Rakyat needs to capture at least 60 percent of total votes cast in order to form the federal government.
So now it is up to Malaysians if they want change or not. If they want change, then make sure 60 percent of the votes goes to Pakatan.
FellowMalaysian: Continuing their effort to engage the EC is clearly an obvious and prudent thing Bersih should be doing as the latter is the constitutional body appointed by the government to handle matters related to electoral system.
The EC, though set up as an independent body but its officers being appointed by the government naturally will only respond reluctantly when prodded by their superiors in the ministries.
In this respect, engaging BN would be the next plausible move if EC's response remains quiescent. Irrespective of what directions Bersih should pursue, through Ambiga's steadfastness and firm resolve, Bersih will eventually see light one day.
Paul Warren: Umno's BN does not care what the rakyat thinks because they believe it is their ability to manipulate and engineer their victory that gives them the power and authority they yield. Their contempt for the rakyat is understandable when you see that they really don't need them, as they have them nicely reined.
Kgen: The EC is just like a branch of Umno; how is it going to change? This is like hoping a drug addict will reform himself by advising him. Tougher action is needed to pressure the EC such as Bersih 3.0.
