Police are using the historic site as a detention point for those who were arrested.
KUALA
LUMPUR: The historic Dataran Merdeka, where the country first declared
her independence, has become a detention point, at least for now.
The police, which had earlier placed barbed wires and barricades to
stop the Bersih 3.0 participants from entering the area, have now
dismantled them and are using Dataran Merdeka as a detention point for
those arrested following skirmishes with the police.
Earlier, the protesters tried to barge into Dataran Merdeka but were
stopped in their tracks by a barrage of tear gas and the spray of water
cannons.
The police then pursued the participants to arrest those who did not want to disperse when asked to do so.
The participants who ran towards the City Hall building and Jalan Parlimen were chased and arrested.
They
have been brought to Dataran Merdeka, where a police control point had
been set up. They are expected to be transported to the Police Traning
Centre (Pulapol) at Jalan Semarak.
Political leaders arrested are expected to be ferried to the Jinjang police station.
Meanwhile as tension heightens, the protesters and the police are
poised for a showdown along Jalan Raja Laut, with both sides setting up
barricades.
The protesters are using rubbish and planks for their barricades and some of them armed with sticks have charged at the police.
