Aug 17: Veteran politician Lim Kit Siang has instructed his lawyers
to initiate legal action over a false accusation posted on the Facebook
page of a new Malay movie which is based on UMNO's version of the 1969
racial riots.
"In view of the reckless accusation by Tanda Putera’s executive producer, compounding the earlier defamation against me on the film’s official Facebook page, I am instructing my lawyers to institute legal proceedings relating to the defamation," Lim announced in a statement.
Aida Fitra Buyong, executive producer of Tanda Putera, had earlier reacted to Lim's comments affirming his right to take legal action against a photograph of him found on the movie's official Facebook page, with a claim that the picture was taken just after he had urinated at a flagpole bearing the Selangor flag at the then Selangor Menteri Besar's residence.
Lim rapped Aida for saying he was being “defensive” over the matter.
"Aida’s accusation has in fact debunked the claim by Tanda Putera’s director Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba that the May 13 riot scene, which lasts about 10 minutes of the 115-minute film, was historically accurate," said Lim.
Lim said the people behind the film should not expect him to keep silent "while they concoct lies about the May 13, 1969 riots".
Based on his photo posted on Facebook which has since been removed, UMNO cybertroopers have been claiming that Lim was instrumental in sparking the May 13 riots.
The photo shows Lim being dragged by several uniformed personnel, and is believed to be linked to an altercation in 1984 in Sabah.
