This is a high-handed statements by Mahathir although he is
specifically targeting the muslims in PAS as well as threatening the
dignity of DAP which has never been an anti-Islamic Party. Doesn’t he
see such statements have serious complications towards a multi-religious
and multi-racial country like Malaysia?
I believe that the malaysian
masses understand his hidden sinister motives as nothing else but to
wholly safeguard his legacy and also most probably to pave the way for
his son, Muhkriz’s taking over the helm of government in the near
future.
UMNO to him is just only a ‘Tool’ to further his cause towards
nepotism and cronyism. He has treated UMNO at his whims and fancies. A
good example is that he was once stripped of UMNO membership by the
Former first PM due to his different political ideology and during
Badawi’s era, he left UMNO at his own accord and later only to be
re-instituted upon his application when Najib took over the helm. The
point here is that UMNO is only good if it serves his agenda.
For the non-muslims, I opine that the Hudud doesn’t pose any threat
to them as they pretty well know that Islam accommodates the existence
of other religions in the Malaysian Society and in the words of MP
Dzulkefly Ahmad as in his recent blog: “Islam………accords a respect to the
“absolutist doctrine” of all transcendental religions”.
To my mind, an
implementation of the Islamic penal code is not at all an issue as long
as it is purely for the muslims and in accordance with the federal
constitution. If the majority of muslims want such law, why not and we
have the Parliament to endorse it and of course with the help of
non-muslims to get the two third majority.
If the sanctity of Hudud is to have been grossly misused by
irresponsible politicians to further their self-interests, then it will
certainly invite religious conflicts of no ending. Hence, should muslims
heed mahathir’s highly selfish “Call”?
Mahathir’s U-Turn Call for implementation of the Islamic penal code
will certainly backfire and does not help either UMNO nor Najib. The
other non-muslim component parties in BN would repudiate the move as
they are not ready to lose a slew of supporters on the ground. It is
now pretty clear that Mahathir is pursuing his own agenda, and I am
optimistic that the majority of muslims won’t fall into his infamous
trap.
