Ousted Perak menteri besar Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin has made an impassioned plea to the Chinese community to reach out to the Malay voters of Bukit Gantang.
Mohd Nizar said that the Chinese community - influenced by a freer Chinese media - were already solidly behind Pakatan Rakyat, but Malays were still largely unable to hear his explanations on current affairs first hand.
He explains that this was due to the authorities thwarting several of Pakatan Rakyat’s bid to reach the Malay voters, particularly in Trong and Kuala Sepetang.
Citing an example, Mohd Nizar said that the authorities had stopped a function at a mosque in Trong yesterday.
“You represent the business community here. It is incumbent upon you to inform all Malays who frequent your shops or do business with to support Pakatan,” he said.
Mohd Nizar said this during a dinner organized by DAP in Taiping, which is the nearest major commercial area to the Bukit Gantang constituency.
Earlier in his speech, Mohd Nizar explained why Pakatan was staking its claim as the legitimate government of Perak and why it was crucial for the coalition to win in the upcoming Bukit Gantang by-election.
“It seems like a minor election, but the implications are huge. It is very symbolic as (a win by Pakatan) will open the doors of democracy and racial harmony,” he said.
Large turnout at dinner
He adds that Bukit Gantang was the opportunity for the public to “bury” Umno, prompting loud cheers from the crowd.
“Let us put Najib (Abdul Razak) to rest and open up a new chapter for Malaysia,” he said.
Later, Mohd Nizar appeared overwhelmed when the crowd replied to his question who to vote for come polling day on April 7.
“PAS,” shouted the crowd. But as Mohd Nizar tried to correct them by saying “Pakatan Rakyat”, his voice was drowned out by boisterous chants of “Nizar, Nizar, Nizar”.
The fully packed 140-table dinner was organized in one of the largest Chinese restaurants in Taiping. As all seats had been sold out, many were left standing outside the restaurant to watch a long-list of speakers, mostly DAP state reps, on projector screens.
Half the guests paid RM40 for a seat inside the air-conditioned restaurant, while others paid RM30 for a seat on a road-side table.
It was announced later that more than RM31,000 was collected in donations for the Bukit Gantang by-election fund.
