Anwar and cops: Should I stay or should I go?

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is prepared to go voluntarily to the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters to be questioned over the sodomy allegation if police cease trying to serve him with an order to appear.

Anwar, who has been accused of sodomy by his former aide Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, had earlier agreed to present himself voluntarily at 2pm on Monday.

As at 3.15pm, he still hand't turned up.

However, he changed his stance on Sunday, claiming police had harassed his family in trying to serve an order requiring him to do so.

"On Saturday morning the police called and asked whether Datuk Seri Anwar could come to the station and we said okay and fixed it for Monday at 2pm," said Anwar's lawyer Sankara Nair when contacted.

"However, at 9pm, the officer called and said that he had served the order under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code on him.

"I told him that if they want to take the legal line our deal (to come voluntarily) is off.

"On Sunday morning, Datuk Seri Anwar's daughter called and said the police were at the house trying to serve the order and would not leave even though her father wasn't there.

"At 5pm, I wrote to the police that in view of their intimidation and harassment of the family I don’t think we could come on Monday.

"I added, however, that we were prepared to come in voluntarily if they called us again and fixed another date," he said, adding that Anwar was at home right now.
